First, thanks to all prius chatters. I've been lurking for several months and am amazed by the wealth of information. Great site!

Second, I've been watching as the 06's arrived at various locations throughout the country and wondering when they would get to New York. I've been looking online, emailing many dealers and thinking that I would wind up buying one out of state. All the dealers have been saying that they have long waiting lists, put a deposit down, get on the waiting list, 1-5 month delivery etc. To all the dealers I said no, give me a call when you get one in that's not presold.

I've also been checking the online inventory of many dealers to see if the 2006's have arrived. Well Friday I saw that one 2006 prius arrived at a local dealer. I emailed him and asked if it was available. He emailed me back and said no, presold. Last night, after the dealership closed, he emailed me that the buyer backed out and it was mine if I wanted it. I signed the papers this afternoon. MSRP. He threw in rear bumper protectors (I had to get something). No extras, no hard sell, the 'closer' asked if I wanted the extended warranty, I said no. She said okay. The whole process was painless, took maybe 45 minutes. When I said I wanted to pick it up on Jan 2nd the salesman said the manager understands there are tax advantages to doing so and it's no problem.

Now about the RED. It is bright, almost fire engine red. Altho it was originally my wife's first choice of colors, when we saw it - it was VERY RED. But since we had a yellow celica when we were younger, we said "why not" and took it. But it is not subdued at all.

Thanks again, to all on this forum!

Welcome! Good to have you "on the ground" (if that's possible with electrons).

You went about buying in exactly the right way, and got your payoff. :)

You know you have to drive that red car wearing shades (wife, too), don't you?

I am also picking up a silver 06 pkg 5 on 1/02. Just wondering what your final costs are going to be. I am paying MSRP + 186 for floor and rear mats, +$580 destination charge, $3205 for pkg 5, $86 for new plates, and $298 paper fee. I tried to get them to take off the paper fee but they would not negotiate on that item. They said everyone pays that fee to store paper docs for 7 years. I also got them to switch the tires to Michelin Harmony's for about $275.00. Total cost without the tires with a 5% sales tax and a $1000 trade in allowance for a 95 Honda Odyessy with 183,000 miles will be $26,314. I thought I did ok except for the paper fee. I live in MA.

It sounds like you did ok. My costs were the same MSRP plus I paid a $45 license fee - this is the fee they charge to register the car and get the plates in NY. Sometimes they waive it, but I didn't even ask them to. Mine came with mats, wheel locks both for MSRP. The only thing they threw in was a rear bumper protector which is about $75. I think, so far, most people on Prius Chat paid MSRP, some more, a few a couple of hundred less but those people seemed to have gotten the extended warranty which adds plenty of dealer profit.

How can you check a dealer's inventory online? Thanks.

    It depends on the dealer

    (and select Prius)

I keep looking at my dealer they put up cars as soon as they have a VIN, this is prior to their arrival and they seem to disregard the fact they are already sold.
