CPO= certified pre owned which means it should have passed a safety and mechanical inspection. a sideswipe accident usually will not create frame damage so its very conceivable and of minimal worry i suspect

It was on the carfax I didn't see it until after the sale. How can I find out for sure if cop means no accidents. My mileage is way low too. Between 37-42, even when I am very careful.

there is no guarantee of anything on a CPO other than it has passed a safety and mechanical inspection. some dealers might imply they have done more and some just might but unless they sell you or offer you a warranty, you have none.

another thing; accidents carry a very heavy stigma for sure but do not always means the car is no longer safe or reliable. in this day and age, a very minor accident can still cost thousands to fix

We had an older car (doesn't matter what kind, but not a Prius) that was totaled due to to minor accidents in about a week (neither one our fault). First, a car popped out from a parking spot w/o looking, and tore up/dented the passenger side front quarter panel and front passenger door, and about a week later, someone popped out of a driveway between two parked cars and damaged the rear quarter panel. Both were minor, sheet metal damage only.

As it turned out, the two (other) drivers had the same insurance co; when my wife went in for the 2nd appraisal the adjuster said "You are supposed to go to the other guys adjuster" :). He said that because the first set of damage had not yet been repaired (like we had time), he had to total the car. We got the car repaired, and drove it for a couple of years on a "salvage title". So even the presence of a "salvage title" does not necessarily mean it had a bad accident, if it is old enough.

Wow Jim!! that is a long way from my understanding of a "Salvage" title. first it has to be totaled by an insurance company before salvage can be applied to it.

Salvage has a BROAD meaning. It can be quite minor but if the cost to repair is greater than the cost to total...

ya, figured as much. Each state probably has its own definition

that right there makes it a big vague but to retitle is pretty clear. get it fixed and pass a mechanical and safety check

My thoughts exactly. I had a similar hit on one of my previous cars...looked only like cosmetic, but in reality it affected all the suspension and drive line of that axel. Unfortunately that did not come to light until long after I was driving it again and settlement closed. Be sure to get the rear suspension fully check and also ensure alignment/wheel balancing is completed on their tab.

$8,000 worth damage. Prius is back on the road! It took a month to fix it. Got $3,000 in diminished value. (sorry it took a year to reply) ;)
