    hi y'all,

i've been lurking this site for a long time but this is my first post.

i want to add some bass to my aftermarket deck via subwoofer, without sacrificing cargo space

perusing these threads, i see two options:
    1. custom enclosure on a 10" sub in the driver-side cubby with the amp in the cargo tray. questions:
      1. i can't find any of these on sale online for the gen ii prius. anyone know where i can buy one?
      2. if I need to get it custom-made at a local shop
        1. should i be using the extra space below the cubby area for the enclosure as well (this is the space that holds the battery on the passenger side cubby).
        2. how much should i expect to pay?
    2. low-profile sub & amp in the cargo tray, leaving *in* the spare tire. questions:
      1. with the carpeted lid covering the speaker, how will the bass sound? (i don't want to cut a hole in the cover and have the speaker exposed). i see a user a few years ago tried this and reported good bass but he was using an add-on plastic weather cover vs the stock carpeted cover which i suspect may be more muffling.
      2. the slim powered sub from BOSS that was well-loved here on priuschat for this purpose a few years ago is not an option as the amazon reviewers say that they fry after a short amount of use. Does anyone have any recommendations for or against any of the following (assuming they fit, i haven't done my measurements)?
        1. Amazon.com: Pioneer TS-SWX310 12-Inch Shallow Series Preloaded Enclosure: Car Electronics
        2. Amazon.com: Kicker 10tcvt84 Tcvt8 Single Comp. Vt 8 Sub Thin: Car Electronics
        3. Amazon.com: Kicker Comp 07TCVT124 Thin-Prof Seal Box 4-Ohm Subwoofer: Electronics
        4. Amazon.com: Power Acoustik THIN-10BX Thin 10-Inch Wooferbox and Speaker: Car Electronics
        5. Amazon.com: Soundstream STEALTH13BX Shallow Depth Loaded Enclosure: Electronics
Any questions you can answer would be super appreciated! gotta get some bass into these tunes!

ps. for my deck, i'm using the brand new touch-screen double-din totally awesome sony xav-601bt (has android integration coming soon via mirrorlink, and runs on android itself, thus will probably get rooted by the hacker community which would rock)

If you put the sub in the cargo tray like I did, don't worry at all about 'muffling' the sound. Subwoofers are often installed in the trunks of sedans, behind the rear seats, and still sound great. The low frequency sound waves go right through. I had to make a custom panel for mine and cut a hole only because it wasn't quite low profile enough - the grill needed to poke up through a bit.
I've heard that custom cubby fiberglass jobs usually run about $300 just for the 'glass work.

thanks don... i understand the principle, but in practice, i guess i'm needing reassurance -- you weren't able to test it with the lid closed at all, without having cut a hole through?

No, but I've had the rear cargo compartment loaded with suitcases on top of the speaker opening and it made no difference in the sound. The only thing you need to worry about is that the speaker can 'breath' - move the air in front of it. If something were pressed right down on top, creating a suction cup effect, then you'd have an issue.

how much "breathing room" would you think is required? would a single inch be pushing it?

if i'm reading you right, your suitcase could go right on top of the speaker, as long as there is no vacuum? so a full inch clearance then would be more than enough?

the one thing i didn't enjoy about putting the subwoofer into the cargo tray was that it rattles the cargo tray cover. to combat this i've had to use both foam pieces and velcro to really make the lid secure without rattles. it's hard to open it now, though.

flareak, after you got rid of the rattling -- are you happy with the bass you're getting through the cover? do you have clearance space between the top of the speaker and the bottom of the cover?

I did not have clearance space. I had to create a hole in the cover to create clearance.

I also would say that no, I'm not happy with the bass I'm getting through the cover or even without. If I sit in the back seat I can hear it very well, if I'm driving then it's barely noticeable. To make it reach my ears while driving, the sub bass would be way too noticeable to other cars, and uncomfortable for anyone in the back.

I don't know how it would sound in the cubby hole, but IMHO, just get some good components for the front and back with good frequency response. My polks in the front fill up plenty of the sub region that I feel as though I don't need my sub at all.

Plus... its a lot easier/cheaper to power front and back speakers with a 4 channel amp than it is to power front, back, and a subwoofer. Just my 2 cents.

cool, thanks... :) i appreciate your honesty.

currently i have my old sub in the back, and given your response, it looks like i'm just gonna leave it in there and get some quick detaches for the times i do need the space. i love the bass i'm getting from it. i spent a while experimenting with the levels. it's quite boom. (modestly, speaking)

1 further q: i have the sub w/amp, with a good new sony deck going directly to the factory speakers (non-jbl). i was surprised by how very much better the factory speakers sounded with the deck upgrade. at this point, how much improvement in sound to expect with a speaker upgrade?

got a link to your polks by chance, flareak?

    peace
