I have a local dealer that I have purchased my last 13 cars from, so they know me and I am comfortable with them. I sent an internet request for a quote on a 2012 Prius 4 with solar sun roof option. MSRP is $33,040.00. That includes shipping of $760 and $220 for floor mats/cargo mat.

Anyway, I got a price quote back of $31,874. That is without even sitting down to negotiate.

Assuming they won't go any lower, does that seem like a good price for it?????

That's why I'm asking. Don't know what they are going for. However, that doesn't seem too far off when I check Truecar.com, carsdirect, etc. The identical car is low to mid-$31K

That's high. I paid $32,600 OUT THE DOOR (incl. all taxes, registration, fees) for my 2012 Prius IV in winter grey with the solar roof pkg in Hayward, CA... Following 2 weeks of negotiation (exclusively by email) with 14 Bay Area dealers, that is ;)

NICE!! Thanks for replying. I've got emails in to 3 other dealers and I'll see what they say.

WOW, for a Prius IV with solar package? If so that's great. Where are you located? I may have to shop where you live!!!

I bought my 2010 2 weeks ago from Sierra Toyota in Lancaster , ca .because I could not get into a 2012 Prius 4 with Solar for the price I wanted. I wanted to make a cash deal happen with no loans so I drove out with a 2010 Prius V that was a lease turn in with 30,000 miles and a 125,000 mile Toyota esp for $22,500 out the door.

They quoted me for a Black Prius IV with the solar option 32,900 out the door (including ca tax, lic and any prep) They had at least 3 of each color in stock for the III and IV model packages. I think there was still a little room to make the deal happen.

I'm based in Oakland and purchased from Autowest Toyota of Hayward, CA. $32.6k out the door also included not doing ANY dealer financing - put 1/2 down with a cashier's check and handed them pre-approved loan documents from Navy Federal Credit Union for the remainder. They didn't bat an eye. Overall, a really great experience.

I was astounded by the range of prices in my hunt... at the lower end there were other dealerships that came close (~$500), but at the high end there were a number of dealers quoting me $2k - $3k more OTD. Pays to shop around!

Another thought, Dmatt: In your negotiations, I highly recommend asking exclusively for "out the door" price if you want to be able to compare apples-to-apples between multiple dealerships and don't want to face any surprises when it comes time to purchase. All the dealer needs to know to calculate an accurate OTD price is where the car will be located so they can calculate taxes/registration for that city/county.
