Still very much a n00b, but tried Zorin Linux on my old desktop.

The sell point of Zorin is you can opt to navigate like Win 7, Win xp, GNOME. OK - training wheels.

Compared to my main computer the notebook it may run faster even with a slower CPU, half the RAM at 4GB, 32-bit instead of 64-bit and my notebook is tuned up with Win 7.

Still trying to figure out how to install it on my notebook....the problem is I've got a dual boot between Win 7 and Win 8 RP (final beta.)

    Any ideas/suggestions from you 'penguins?'

You are going to have trouble dual booting anything with Windows 8 because of "Secure Boot". Some Linux distros are trying to get around these problems.

Ubuntu allows you to set up for dual boot using a simple gui when installing - I don't know if any other distro is as easy.

    How about dumping 8?

Or, isn't here an option to run it from within Windoze? Another option, although less desirable, would be to run it off a USB flash drive.

Zorin was a new one to me so I looked it up. It's based on Ubuntu which is good (at least I think that's good).

^ I have scratched Win 8 RP from my hard drive, but somehow the secure boot stuff is not gone yet.

Anyway, Zorin is based on Ubuntu. It provides "training wheels" by allowing navigation in a Win 7, Win xp, or native GNOME mode....the Win mode is virtual of course.

    Thank you for your input.

Finally installed Zorin Linux in a dual boot config with Win 7 on my notebook this weekend.

I'll stress it later, but expect to run more on Linux. Already, Win 7 seems slow at times and it's tuned up.

Finding out LibreOffice is not exactly like MS Office - I might check out OpenOffice.

Doing this on a Celeron powered HP, so it lacks the hardware for running a virtual machine.

LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice and has more community support. I haven't looked back at OpenOffice in about a year but doubt you will see much difference between the two. LibreOffice will most likely be the better supported more up to date one of the two, with the difference getting bigger in the future.
