My Sirius Plug & Play solution

Right on...thanks for the reply. I was actually thinking about a floor position last night. I may end up switching it. I havn't had trouble knocking it down myself, but if other people in my car do then it would make sense to move it.

 

I went to Sirius's website and they have a cool area where they section out the US and tell you which direction you should try to face a home antenna, based on where you live in the country to get the best reception. Althought like anything else, I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions to their recommendation.

 

There is a way to have your sattelite radio usable through the MFD screen, you can find some threads on it further down. I'm not sure if it is usable with your unit though. There is a company on the east coast that sells the kits that comes with the radio and a DVD showing you how to install, but it is several hundred dollars and requires you to take your dash out to do it. Also, from what people have posted, the MFD doesn't have the ability to display as many characters nor does it have as many presets as many of the sattelite recievers have (I have 30 and I am quickly finding even that isn't enough ).

Anyhow, if you wanted to add an extra unit onto your subscription, I think it is only an extra $4 or $6 a month, I can't remember which. But that is why I liked the plug and play option, no extra $$ for car to home.

Thanks to all for the home docking advice. I couldn't wait for my gift card to get here so I went and bought it yesterday. It was a quick hook up and fortunately my wife's plant window that is by our stereo faces the right direction(s) for reception. I found a great spot for it. So far, once every hour or hour and a half, I lose reception for anywhere from 5 seconds to up to a minute. Not really worth trying an outside install for that, imho. Sound quality ROCKS and totally kicks FM sound quality sqwaa in da nuts. Now I want two remote controls so I don't have to move the one from the car to the house. Don't know if they sell them seperately though.

 

Hey, glad the step by step helped! I was hoping to save some people some time with it.

I thought I tried pulling the end of the antenna (plug) every way possible including trying to get it in at the side, with the back hatch in various positions and just couldn't find a way to do it. Very nice job there! I must have had brain overload from trying to plan it all out and didn't see how it was possible.

Thanks for the pics of your install too. It's good to see all the options we have with the installs. If the yellow color of the strips really bugs you, would coloring them with a permanent marker be possible? It's hard to tell the texture of the strips from the pic.

 

I had worried about the seal issue, but after looking at how thin the antenna wire was and seeing how things looked after running it through the back gasket, I wasn't worried. It is so thin that after it is in place the gasket just pops right back into it's groove and doesn't appear to leave any room for water to get in. I'm in Portland, and it has been raining mostly nonstop for the last two weeks and there has been no leakage issues yet. Like everything else though, I will post up if there are any problems. I suppose it wouldn't hurt though to run it under the outside of the gasket down to a side position and then take in from there. Better safe than sorry.

 

I am guessing the writer was talking about the seal between the frame and the hatch as there would be no reason to try to take the wire through the window. I opened my hatch after his post and really took a close look and I don't see any way that water is going to get in. The antenna wire is really super thin and when you pop the seal back in its groove, it seals around the wire (at least mine does).
