Good day everyone. Has anyone ever used a K&N oil filter on a Prius. I was thinking about picking one up for my next oil change as it having the top that can be removed with a socket wrench (which would help me a lot).

    Any thoughts?

So long as reliability and fuel mileage were not reasons you bought a Prius, go for it!

Toyota designed the Toyota parts, so you know they work well with the car.

Getting oil on the mass air flow sensor has been an issue.

So are you saying that buying a K&N oil filter would cause harm to my Prius?

Absolutely not! Installing it might over oil the MAF, as it has for others, , but buying it is completely safe.

I am looking for an oil filter that will last about 12k miles since I have been putting Amsoil 5w-30 in the car (which is suppose to last 12k miles as well). Any recommendations?

oh, that makes sense. I was wondering why that would cause issues to the MAF. So, the filter should be just fine?

I have not used this oil filter as I use the Toyota-branded filter.

If your concern is simply being able to easily remove the used filter, I suggest that you bring the filter that you use to your local auto parts store and look for a metal (not plastic) cap wrench that tightly fits the filter top. Then you can turn that metal cap with a 3/8" ratchet and extension.

Have yet to find a definitive article that shows one oil filter performing better than another oil filter. Near as I can tell there are filters that people see the insides of and realize the cheap ones, like the Toyota filter don't have much filter material. But no proof of any filter on the market not providing enough filtration. Filters get changed out so often it's not that big of a deal... I tried an overpriced Purolator but that seemed silly to do that every time. My recent filter is a NAPA Gold, a quality filter I used in my Subaru so as not to void the warranty on the rebuilt engine. I also read all the PriusChat threads on oil filters and found nothing definitive about one filter truly being better than another filter...

I have used these on my Prius without any problems. They are made by Champion Labs as are the Mobil1, STP and several others. You might note that I don't go out of my way to buy these. I have a few I came across and don't feel right installing them on customers cars so I use them on my own.

My theory is that BITOG has saved us all. Everyone even thinking of producing oil or oil filters at such a qualitative deficit that they would actually harm a car has been sued out of existence. I've already driven a quarter million miles (across several cars) on whatever filters were under the $3/ea threshold from Rock Auto.

Those are hoses with metal plugs in them and inside each is oil that was originally contaminated and remaining contamination in each hose is a sample of the oil after it was run through a specific brand of filter.
