Am looking for suggestions for all season tires for my 2005. Traction/safety without excessive noise is my priority, and though I run winter tires I still prefer all seasons for those times when early or late snows catch you by surprise. Willing to give up an mpg or two.
I have run Goodyear triple treads most recently. Anyone have anything they have found to be esp. helpful (or that they would avoid)? Have read the TireRack, Consumer Report, other reviews but am looking for info specific to prius (sec gen if possible, or any) and tires not necessarily tested by those folks. Thanks!

My favorite All Weather Tire is the Nokian WRg2 as it is a proven Low Rolling Resistance tire that has ice/snow/wet traction comparable to many true snow tires. It is a bit pricy (my last set was about $150 per tire plus installation and taxes) and will go about 50,000 miles before wearing down to the point where traction becomes suspect.

I am now on my second set and will buy another next year for my 2004 Prius (now at 227, 000 miles). Previous tires were the Goodyear Integrity (terrible tires) that came with the car and then the Michelin MXV4+ (not a bad tire - LRR but discontinued) and then the original Nokian WRs which were also great tires, but a bit noisier than the newer WRg2.

The nokians are great but their price kinda hurts. With the Michelin $70 rebate the Primacy MXV4 is a good buy but you will lose some mpg with them. Their lower cost and higher treadwear warranty would put them on par with the Nokians. They are currently $402 after the rebate at TireRack.com. They are a quiet tire with great handling and comfort.

I believe the Nokian WRg2 will handle more winter conditions than a all-season like the MXV4 or any other all-season tire for that matter ,there-for it is worth the bucks in my book? H

OP uses winter tires. I suggest Bridgestone Ecopia EP422, and there is no need to give up mpg.

PER TIRE RACK ...Ecopia EP422 tires are designed to enhance vehicle fuel economy by reducing tire rolling resistance along with the vehicle's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions while delivering year-round, all-season traction, even in light snow.
The Ecopia EP422 uses an all-season tread compound featuring Bridgestone's unique NanoPro-Tech (Nanostructure-Oriented Properties Control Technology) to reduce rolling resistance and energy loss while maintaining dry, wet and wintertime traction.

I think they are a good tire, just not very good in the winters they have in Ohio. H

Again, the OP stated he has winter tires.

You might want to try the Michelin Defenders. I bought mine a few months ago and they are fairly quiet, provide very good grip, and have a comfortable ride. I never had the Triple Treads so I can't make a comparison, but if you believe Michelin's marketing department, they are supposedly better.

I've been very happy with my Michelin Energy Savers. They haven't faced any snow yet, but they've been great in rain and are very quiet. But, then, I drove my 2005 through 3" of icy, slushy, snow on nearly bald tires and did just fine, so I'm not too worried. The Prius is very sure-footed.

I have Bridgestone Ecopia EP422's on my 2006 Prius. I live at 4500 feet in the southern Sierras in Calfornia and get snow 4-5X per year. I don't recommend the EP422's for snow. I love the way they handle normally, but the one time I ventured out on the icy roads that had been snow-plowed I was all over the place. I went back home and got into my F150 4WD truck. Maybe I was expecting too much.

I just installed All Weather Nokian WR g2 . It is a hassle with TPM. This way one tire for both seasons. I how-ever have taken a hit in the FE department. 10%. Hope it gets better! H

There is no way that WRg2 tires can hurt MPG. What PSI are you running?

Hi Jeff- 40 ft 38 rr . I actually just lowered the pressure to 36 all around as the wife found that the ride was harsh. Also only 200 Kilometers on them! H

    Harold,

What size are they and what tires did they replace? You need to adjust for the difference between revolutions per mile of each tire as different brand/model tires have different revs/mile even at the same "size". Worn tires have a smaller circumference than new tires (by about o.5Inches/24 inches or 2%) so that accounts for a 2% difference in MPG when replacing tires.

I run my WRg2's at 42/40 PSI and they can handle up to 51. These are strong tires (at least the H rated ones that I buy). I hope that you didn't go for the "run flat" version as they do have a significantly higher rolling resistance and that would account for a 10% hit in MPG.

Hi Jeff- size is the standard 185/65/15 They replaced the Integrity by G/Y. I realize they can handle 51 lbs. and will have more in them once run in. I am sure these are a good tire for the Prius as they are a popular tire used by a fair # on this site. I did manage 3 ltr. per 100 kil locally the other days , so I know they have it in them. My wife is not doing as well with the Nokian as with the G/Y. H
