Bolts falling off from underside of Prius v

    DriverSide_NoBolts.jpg PassSide_2bolts.jpg I just noticed this evening that there is a bar on the underside of my 2012 Prius v which runs across the width of the car just in front of the rear wheels. The reason I noticed it is because one side of this bar was hanging loosely just inches above the pavement! I stuck my head under the car and could clearly see that bolts were missing. The side which was still attached had 2 bolts (remaining)... both of which had worked themselves quite loose. I have tightened them down and applied nylon tiestraps to both sides of the bar to hold it in place until I find replacement bolts... preferably to be replaced by Toyota service. The car has only 5000 miles on it and was recently in for regular service at a Toyota dealer. I am completely shocked to find bolts on the underside of this new car coming off! Had this bar come off at highway speeds, it could have caused a serious accident for those behind me. Unbelievable.

    Has anyone here experienced the same problem with a 2012 Prius v? Can someone explain to me what this bar is? (it appears to simply bolt to the undercarriage, so I assume it is just there to deflect obstacles from hitting cables, etc.) If you don't have this bar on your Prius v... perhaps you've already lost it on the road somewhere. Yikes.

    Toyota service is getting a call first thing in the morning...

    I wonder what else is destined to start falling of my "reliable" family car? It is somewhat ironic that I just had a discussion with my wife earlier in the day that I might be in need of a new socket set for the garage. Perhaps I should send it to Toyota.

    I have just added 2 photos. Driver side shows no bolts. Passenger side shows 2 bolts. I put the tiewraps on this evening to keep things in place until I get new bolts.

    Checked our"v" this AM and bolts are in place and tight...Two(2) per side...

    I used to do a lot of long distance bicycle riding on highway shoulders and had to watch in front of me to make sure I didn't run over any debris that would damage a tire. I saw lots of nuts on the shoulder (but few bolts). With all of those car parts (mostely nuts) on the side of the road, it's amazing that more cars don't collapse on the road due to missing parts.

    Can one of our "suspension experts" explain the purpose of this bar? It's exactly as AVD described it, but not being familiar with the rear suspension used on the v, I am at a loss to understand its purpose.

    Had to leave the car with Toyota service overnight while they tracked down replacement bolts. They also removed the bar completely to check and make sure it hadn't been damaged. Today, they replaced the bolts and also added some sort of adhesive to hold the bolts better. Everything is fine now. It sounds like the primary purpose of the bar is to protect the underside.
    Interesting sidenote... they said that this was a first for them. No other reports of loose bolts so far. So they even took pictures and sent a report to Toyota HQ to make special note of this problem. It will be interesting to see if additional reports of this pop up.

    Toyota, like most Japanese and Korean cars use J.I.S. or Japan Indistrial Standard bolts. They like as they may be M8x1.25 metric fine with smaller 12mm between the flats hex heads.

    I worked on aircraft systems for years. Nearly all bolts are retained by safety wire.Back in the days of the Model A and Model B Ford, a lot of engine an drive train bolts were also safety wired.

    Now, for the sake of economy all bolts are just torqued.

    Yearly, I inspect all of the bokts on my vehicles and tighten them as needed. Working on bolts for over 50 years, I have a good feel on how tight they should be.

    For those, who are novices, a torque wrench, even a cheap $10 Harbor Freight one is a good investment.

    I looked under my "v" today.

    The crossbar, apparently, is placed there to offer a degree of protection to protect the gas tank from backing over debris that might cause it damage.

    As I suspected. the two M8 J.I.S. "flanged bolts" on the ends fasten to "captive" nuts welded to the inside of the chassis. The inner bolts go through the bar and are closed with closed end acorn nuts, also J.I.S. The inner bolts and nuts hols small metal brackets that retain amd route the parking brake cables.

    Over the years, when I visited those "pick ypur part" wrecking yards, I have collected a wide variety of those J.I.S. bolts and parts.

    I also found a source for brand new high strength 10.9 grade J.I.S. bolts that are suitable for internal engine and transmission use.

    It is sad that Toyota dealers do NOT have the foresight to do the same.
