Sometime ago, I wrote a messege to this group regarding my experience at, what I consider, an unscrupulous Toyota dealership in my area. Not only did the saleman allow me to test drive a car that was already sold to someone else, but, quoted me a price with a "premium" of $5,000 above sticker.

Today, I visited a dealership about 25 miles from my home and spoke to a young saleman who had worked there for only a month. A very friendly guy and appears to be very upfront and honest. There were a couple of Prius' on the lot, but, they had already been sold. He allowed us to sit in one, but, not drive it. I respected that. I asked for a quote with a package 4. On the information sheet he gave me, he just wrote "package #4" and indicated a price of $25,036. I assume that this included the Toyo Guard, which he said comes on the cars that they are getting and mats. When I told him that I would not pay a premium, he didn't even know what I was talking about. He said the price of the car came right off the sticker. With dealer prep of 599.95 and delivery charges and taxes, excluding "tags, title and fees", the price of the car was $27,226 complete. Is this a good price? I think it is, but, I wanted to get some other opinions.

    Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure the difference between option 4 & option 7 (we have 7), but we paid very close to $28,500 for ours. You know, I'd have to look at my bill of sale and see if we even paid the usual dealer charges. I don't recall seeing these.....

    Rick...

That sounds a little high to me... MSRP is $21,725 and a package #4 is $1825. I ordered a package #6... after delivery, tax, tags, mats ($185ish?) AND $990 for a platinum warranty, I paid around $28,300 or so.

    Sounds high.

I agree... it sounds high to me. I just ordered a Magnetic Gray, Pkg 5 today and negotiated a price of $25,300 (MSRP would have been $25,700).

    I concur. I was quoted $24,459 for a '06 with #4. Wound up getting a '06 #0 but that's a whole 'nuther tale...

High. I signed a purchase order and put down a $500 deposit on an '06 with PKG #4 in Maryland for $24130 (MSRP) - 330 (negotiated discount) = $23800. Whatever additional you are paying over MSRP must be due to the additional options or they're charging you too much.

Play with the math a little. $27226 - 25036 = $2190. Standard Prius delivery is $580, but that SHOULD have been included in the original $25036. Apparently it wasn't.

There IS NO standard "dealer prep" charge. Most dealers charge NONE.

Now: mats are $186 (should be included in MSRP. Your license and tax are excluded (there IS NO title unless you pay cash, and then you get the title from DMV).

Now: what's the $2190 for??? Even if the original price didn't include delivery, that still leaves $1610. Even if it didn't include mats, that leaves $1424.

Now tell me what the $1424 is for.

May I suggest, actuary32174, that you go to the Toyota.com/prius web site and "Build Your Own Prius"? Based on your location (please add it to your profile) it will list out the MSRP, Package Option, Delivery charge, and any dealer options you pick (like mats). You can use this to determine if your dealer is padding his price with DAP (Dealer's Additional Profit). Toyota's MSRP gives the dealer about $2K, so you shouldn't have to give them more.
