Total cost to own

    So I basically posted this in a different thread and it got me thinking.

    What is the total cost to own of this car vs you re-buying a new version or you old car. Thought it might be fun to share with each other. For this id like ya to use Edmunds.com to be more fair but i know you guys and following the rules :)


    So here is me

    Fully loaded Honda Fit 2012 Honda Fit 1.5L 4-cyl. 5-speed Automatic w/Navigation True Cost to Own
    Fully loaded Prius C4 2012 Toyota Prius c 1.5L 4-cyl. Hybrid CVT Automatic True Cost to Own

    Umm and just to clarify this is for fun try not to fight lol (y)

    This is a great exercise! It was part of the process I used to decide between the choices out there. However, your choice of Edmunds will skew the results. When I put in the Corolla I used to own and the c I purchased, it used a cost for the c that was $7,000 more than the sticker! You cannot choose trims or adjust for mileage to get a true apples to apples comparison.

    Yahoo Autos has one of the best total cost to own calculators for true comparisons. You can choose your own location, mileage up to 20,000 miles per year and the correct trim levels for the purchase.

    My numbers on the Edmunds site showed the Corolla with a 5 year tco of $39369 and the c at $42797. The Yahoo calculator has the Corolla with a 5 year tco of $45615 and the c with $39342. The cost per mile driven from the Yahoo calculator was .45 for the Corrolla and .39 for the c.

    Perhaps I did something wrong on the Edmunds site that would not let me customize. If so, I apologize. However, even using a common calculator with actual sticker prices and using their data for depreciation, maintenance, etc..the c came out cheaper, regardless of the comparison vehicle.

    Well it let me pick trim levels but vary likely is newish as the car is so new to start with. I know lots of pages dont even have a Prius V or C just "normal" Prius. edmunds gave me a top level cost of 37065 for five years. And like I said use what you want I know every one will anyways lol. Just thought using the same one would be most consistent but what do I know, I mean im on here at midnight. . . Yep definitely the wrong guy.

    Thank you for your feedback. The thing thats funny about you looking at the C and the Corolla is that in the old days of the Prius, when no one had them and there was 9 month waiting lists. A lot of dealers sold people the corolla telling them it would be cheaper in the long run.

    I had a Saturn Vue which they don't make anymore so I guess the cost of my C is much better!!
