Koons Tysons Toyota in the Northern Virginia/DC area has the best prices in the region and I ended up buying from them, but they are slimy.

I went there to look at two Prii
    1.) 2011 Prius 1 with 4k miles, listed at $21k
2.) 2010 Prius IV with 65k miles, listed at $16.5k

When I got there I was told that the Prius 1 had just sold an hour before I got there and that the list price on the Prius IV was $2k less than the actual price.

Needless to say I did not buy either of those cars. I ended up getting a 2010 Prius II with 27k miles for just under $19k. The price ended up being good but I would NOT go to this dealer without doing thorough research first and knowing exactly what you want and what you want to pay.

Is this a common experience in Prius buying?

When I was shopping about a month ago, they had great prices advertised on Cars.com I believe. I called the dealer up and at first he gave me a price close to MSRP. I told him I saw the car advertised for ~ $22K and that I would be coming from Cincinnati and could be there the next day. He said, sure I can sell it for that, come on over what time can you be here:confused:? I asked what's the price out the door. Well he finally told me the price didn't include freight nor a $500 "doc fee." I didn't make the trip...

This is a common USED car buying experience.

They got you in the door (any way they could) and you reinforced their behavior when you bought a car from them.

true, true but the price on the car they did have was the best i had seen anywhere.... i suppose it was their tactics that got me in the door, but the prices closed the deal

Wow, this is funny. I just was going to post about how wonderful of an experience I just had there. (Granted I was buying New). They didn't pull any slime tactics on me. Maybe their Used is different from New.

Did you try haggling? I had a similar experience and got a good deal. Every dealership I've ever been to adds the fees to their e-price.

It wasn't worth my time haggling. It would have been an airline ticket and a drive.

actually i think my salesman told me about you.. of course in his version of the story you flew out and bought the car because his prices were so great.

i had about a two hour drive and i let him know that i was not driving 4 hours round trip just to be played games with... the DC/Richmond area has such a saturation of dealerships and Prii that he knows I could have gone somewhere else and negotiated the same deal.

the one thing i will say about this dealership is that their prices are pretty much what you would end up with if you haggled with another dealership...

i did get them to throw in a second key fob!

If I was closer, it wouldn't have been as bad. Their prices were a decent start even with the other fees. Travel cost on top didn't justify the trip. I just wish they were more upfront in their price and not exclude the delivery fee in it as a leader. Also, the guy was a little too eager to want me to get on the plane without a confirmed deal. On the plus side, I did learn to read the fine print afterwards.

i always except 1,000-1,200 in fees, taxes, tags ect to be added on top of a price... the key is getting them to knock some of those off (transfer your own tags for starters)

It was the standard non-negotiable $760 delivery fee for the Prius which nearly every other dealer includes in their advertised price that threw me. But agree that the others are expected and often negotiable (taxes and registration aside).

And yes, you must do your research before stepping into the dealer first.

ah... they did not hit me with that one (i dont think.. ill have to re-check my paperwork)

they DID try to give me a 4.9% interest rate instead of the 2.9% advertised on Toyota's website... i showed them the advertisement and they lowered my rate after telling me "its just a couple of dollars each month" ha!

Got you and understand. It was just the first question I asked, so there was no talk of my coming in until after the fees had been discussed.

Had they tried to get me to come in pre-fee disclosure, I would have felt the same way.
