Has anyone gotten a Mac to transfer contacts?

I searched and didn't find any success stories for pushing the contacts from a Mac into the Prius. I tried to pair the two and the Mac thinks they are paired but the Prius gave me an error. The Mac reports that headset (or hands-free, i forget) is the only supported profile in the Prius. When I try to send contacts using Address Book I get an error something like "Unable to validate bluetooth device".

I was able to do it, but it was not simple. It was just a few days ago, but much of it was trial and error and I will have to go through it again tomorrow morning, to make sure I explain it correctly.

In the meantime, consider cleaning up the contacts. Apparently, the Prius would only one phone number for a contact and would not accept contacts with information in the "company" section of the contact.

So, I created a new group with the numbers I wanted to contact. If the contact already existed, I made a new one and deleted all information except the name and the phone number. Also, since you cannot have any information in the "company" section of the card, I deleted that information or moved it to the "First" and "Last" name fields.

I will post the second step when I have a chance to review what I actually did.

Yes the Prius is a KISS system. One name one phone number. Many have commented that you have to keep the data base simple to effectively transfer the data.

so... yeah. i tried it and i couldnt really even pair the powerbook with the car. i'm not sure i was doing the right thing though. the prius never got off the "pair with phone" screen, but the mac thought it was paired.

usually i'm pretty good with thrashing around on the computer until the right thing happens, but this time no joy.

Ughh. I tried it again and could not get it to work.

I did it once, so I know it is possible.

I will give it another shot.

By the way. I remember that did not need to do one contact at a time. If I highlighted several contacts in Address Book, went to Card->Send these cards..., all of them transferred at one time.

When was the last time that you ran updates on your Mac?

    Got it!

    I hope this makes sense.

Go into your car with your mobile phone. After pressing “power†the car should pair with the phone.

On the Prius, go to the telephone settings and scroll down to Bluetooth. Don’t do anything else yet.

On the Powerbook, go to Bluetooth Setup Assistant. On “Select Device Type†choose “Any Device.†Click continue.

The Powerbook will start looking for devices. On the Prius, click on “Add Phone.â€

(Your cell phone’s Bluetooth will disconnect.)

At this point, it is all a matter of timing. The Powerbook may find “HANDSFREE.â€

If not, go back a step and then to “continue†again. Do the same on the Prius. Go back and then to “add phone†again.

If the Powerbook shows “HANDSFREE†as a discovered device click “continue.†It will mention something about gathering information. If it stalls, back up in the steps again on both the Powerbook and the Prius. You may also have to enter the Passkey on the Powerbook. If you do that, the Prius is certain to cancel the process and you will have to repeat the steps on both.

If it does not stall, the Powerbook will state that a connection was established but that no services are available from the device. That is okay. You can then close the Setup Assistant.

The Prius will be stuck on the “enter the passkey screen. “ Don’t cancel. Just push the info button and go back to telephone settings.

This time go to phone book, transfer phone data, but don’t start the transfer yet. Here again, it is a matter of timing and you want to be ready to select transfer.

From your Address Book, highlight the contacts you wish to transfer. Go to Card -> Send these cards. A window opens to select the Bluetooth device. Choose HANDSFREE and click select.

On the Prius, quickly click on transfer phone data. It will either say something like “check your mobile phone†or give you the choice of “overwrite†or “add.†If you got the latter, you are ready to go. If you got the former, back up a step and try again.

(Here again, the mobile phone's bluetooth will disconnect. I don't know when it reconnected.)

Click on overwrite or add. Most likely, the Address Book will say that the device was not validated. Just choose “select†again and it should work. A vCard will show stating that it is being uploaded. Go to the phonebook on the Prius and see if the contact is there. If the contact messed up, clean up the contact in Address Book before sending again.

Note that once you get to this part, you do not have to start all over again unless you turn off one of the devices. If you have to clean up a card and resend it, just do that and send the card. It should work.

    Good luck.

That is why I could never get it to happen. I am too much a Mac User you know "it should work first time every time and I should never have to read any manual to figure out how to work it" It is cold out in the garrage and I did not give it enough time. I am going to retry.

I agree. The whole thing does seem rather "un-Mac" like.

I'm sitting in my new '06 right now with a PowerBook G4, tried to follow your instructions but noticed that on the '06 you do not have the option to "add phone" but you just have to go into the bluetooth and push "register" and it goes into discoverable mode with Passkey 1111 displayed. I could not get it to connect, as soon as the Mac detects "HANDS FREE" and I hit "continue" it fails immediately on the Prius every time. I think the bluetooth may be slightly different on the '06... If anybody has found a way to do it on an '06 with a Mac, please let me know! Otherwise, do you think a new MacBook Pro running Windows natively could do it? I want to transfer the contacts from my Sprint PPC-6601 but doesn't seem possible even though I saw a post about how someone did it by changing the language, etc... but I couldn't get it to work.

    Thanks!
