Do you think that an extended warranty is a waste of money? I didn't purchase one at the time of delivery when I got my c and I'm debating whether or not to purchase before 36,000 miles. Is it worth the large chunk of money??

Waste of money - there is a 99.9% chance that unless you drive this car stupidly, attempt to modify it without knowing what you are doing, or do not do the standard maintenance you will not have any issues with it. Prius Taxis have been seen going up to 500,000 (yes half a million miles) with nothing more than standard maintenance and possibly a Hybrid battery replacement. Other prii have been to 300,000 miles before even a battery replacement. If you look at what the extended warranty costs you would be much better off taking the cash and putting it into a CD or something - then if you needed a major repair, you have quite a bit of money, but if you dont need a repair - you have a lot of cash for your next vehicle downpayment.

I may buy one if I find a good deal somewhere. It would be nice just for the peace of mind and maintenance. I know some Honda dealers back east/south had a big internet presence, they offered great deals on accessories, parts and warranties. Still trying to figure out if Toyota is the same way.

It's really a peace of mind thing. If you've been burned before with a huge, out-of-warranty repair then extended warranties (sponsored by the manufacturer - not the 3rd party ones) can be worth it. If you haven't and/or the car is very reliable, I'd follow dellrio's advice and park the money somewhere (though you're not going to accumulate that much interest at what CD rates have been running). IIRC, the Toyota Platinum 7/100 $0 deductible warranty for the Prius c runs in the neighborhood of $1000.

Regardless, you have until the factory warranty runs out to make a decision.

Where do you find a Toyota Platinum 7 yr/100K mile 0 deductible warranty for $1000??
The dealership in Austin Tx where I just bought my Prius c has the same thing listed for $2300!!! I know b/c I bought it and now am working on cancelling it- it was my first new car purchase in 16 yrs and I just panicked.

I bought my Platinum 7/100k for about $1000 from my dealer too. I figured over 100k something is bound to break. Time will tell of course if I made a good purchase. My dealer also has a lifetime powertrain warranty on their cars too.

Dang it, I wish I would've seen this thread before walking into the dealership and buying th Toyota Care platinum warranty for my C3.. It looks like I overpaid by about $800 and I got 6 years/ 100k.. I'll look at my paperwork and upload the details. In contrast to other posters I wanted to buy a extended warranty that at least covers the car up to 100k.. I'm not a super mechanically inclined driver but I really didn't want to risk not having coverage on all the technology in this car. Th upside is the warranty is bumper to bumper coverage and after talking to the service manager at the Toyota dealership he states that the dealership is inclined to solve any and all problems if its ever found on this car. Toyota pays the dealership if a prob comes up, so with Zero deductible I can bring it in and it's "taken care of." That's the kind of service and peace of mind I'm willing to pay for. I just wish I paid a little less :)

Hmmmmmm extended warranties yikes!......I don't purchase them, pure profit for the dealership, but if it makes you feel better buy it, it's your $$$. Statiscally speaking, the dealership already knows the odds of you ever using an extended warranty are very remote. It is pure profit for the dealership. Trust when I say they have done the math long before you walked in to buy the car. I have a friend who happens to be a finance manager for a new car dealership.;) Just an observation. You would also be amazed at what's not covered if you actually read the fine print, I don't care how Platinum or Kryptonite :) they call it, this is eye candy and again pure profit for the dealer selling you the car.

OP I personally think extended warranties are a waste of money. You would be better off setting that money aside in your savings and invest in yourself. And if you never use it, treat yourself to a nice long vacation in your Prius.

Many new car buyers finance these contracts into their loan, either way dealerships love it when you purchase extended warranties or the maintenance or oil changing/tire rotation, check your fluid contracts. I have owned Toyota products since 1989 and have never purchased or needed an extended warranty. For what it's worth.

after wrecking my new two month old prius c I learned that our extended toyota bought from dealer at time of new car purchase warranty run concurrently with the oem one... Because i canceled out of the 60 grace it cost me 100 dollars of my warranty cost. .. I called my dealer and told him I felt scammed and he agreed that he thought it was not in effect while the 3 year one is...but he was wrong.. and I got screwed... and so did all of you that bought one new also at the time of purchase..

Unless their extended warranty is different from yours.

Since your dealer agrees that you got screwed, did he also give you your $100 back? If he's agreeing that they misled you, it shouldn't be that hard to get $100 out of them.
