CDs ripped (through iTunes) at a high bitrate. Listen to a CD in your car. Compare it to FM. XM is that much worse.
No argument if you want SiriusXM for sports. Compare XM baseball to over the air (same broadcast). XM sounds very tinny.

for me xm is nice because my daily commute crossed 2 metropolitan areas (richmond and dc) and i have about a 10 mile radio deadspot!

I don't see why these Chinese OEM look alike radios are so popular. Do they not make a kit for the car that let's you install a pioneer or Kenwood radio?

So popular? I suspect more people use units like Pioneer or Kenwood when they upgrade.

A double DIN kit leaves a lot of unused space. Some people like the look of a factory look unit. Some people like the buttons which occupy that space. You also avoid the need for a wiring harness, steering wheel control adapter, dash kit and in some cases the need for a JBL turn on adapter.

Also the cost issue. The China OEM look units often cost less then a comparable major brand.

Do any of these after market options offer any of the prius screens like HSI or Consumption that the OEM has? Is that even possible in an aftermarket head unit?

Now your talking about upgrading the JBL system, if I am not mistaken. You will loose function. Search ShawnB2 for his mods on level five for trade off.

But isn't the point of upgrading the radio for better sound? I can't imagine those Chinese ones sound much better than stock

i only like the OEM because of the look.. they make a fit kit, but there is a whole heap of wasted space and it looks (to me) like a cheap solution. what i would really love is a fit kit that properly fills the space.. even with dummy buttons.

ideally, id love to have an android-based system.

in my case no... i dont get in my prius to jam out. the stock sound system is good enough for me... i want my phone/sat radio/nav all integrated with the dash

I have the Nav...but since I have have an 04 half the time I just USe Apple maps....the radio I have now blows the stock one out of the water...I understand paying for features, but it really isn't too hard to install a good aftermarket unit yourself...

this is my workaround... kept the stock stereo and jimmyrigged a mount for my nook color. i tether gps and 4g to the nook from my phone and boom i have an android powered all in one. i need to re-run the power connection with something a little bit longer so it can all be tucked in nicely and the audio is run to the aux port in the center console through the dash.. all nice and hidden.
