My condolences to the dog and the dog's family... As for Prius C owners that can't find replacement parts after an accident.... Y'all oughta get together and work with an attorney to write a letter.... Toyota needs to feel way more pressure!

According to other threads on here the Prius C is in such high demand right now that Toyota have been diverting their inventory of replacement parts to increase the number of vehicles being produced. Add to that the fact that the C is a brand new vehicle that's in very limited supply and you can imagine what a nightmare it's going to be for anyone who crashes their Prius C in the next 10 months or so...

the dog entered the freeway on a onramp about 20 feet from where I hit it head on in the fast lane.
    as for a repair..
well im shooting for something to happen quickly or I my as well start looking for a new car. maybe my dealer will buy this one for trade. and repair a rear ended c.. If they can't get my sub-frame re-welded and straightened .. don't mind my electrical tape roadside repair so i could drive the c home.. if the dealer drags their feet ill have to bend the frame away from the ac unit myself via come along or chain n a tree..

im not sure if a bent radiator support bracket constutes enough damages for a total loss... i can tell its welded onto the bottom of the main I-beam. there is also a energy crash absorption section just prior to the welds on the main I-beam frame..

that being said.. im glad i didn't get any airbags in my face or knees.

I really don't think im going to settle for the sub-frame to just be re bent into place..
The strength of the metal is already weekend enough not to be worth crap in a future mishap .

I'll get lead times on all hard parts tomorrow
I will tell you all the outcome after the dealer gmac insurance pow wow
Thanks all for your condolences to me and the c and to the poor dog.

keep in mind the impact of resale value after the accident. CARFAX is everyone's go to source. i had two very minor accidents on my 2006 Prius and that made it very difficult to sell and this was right after the Tsunami where values were high. i ended up settling for just over the pre-tsunami market value

Always love it when trees get a chance to help with major frame straightening repairs...

I hope the OP is able to get the car fixed soon. There are multiple threads now documenting the difficulting in getting parts for repairs which makes me want to leave my car in the garage occasionally ;-)

I got the car to the insurance preferred repair center and was givin a 3.8k bill for repair The lower radiator support is needed to be replaced in sections and maybe the frame it self is bent. will know more tomorrow when i get the estimate from where i dropped the car off at ultimately is the dealers body shop..don't think its a good idea to work with my insurances preferred shop

The dog wasn't one of those mean ravage looking pits.. more like the big happy wag the tail kind and its face still haunts me. I love all animals.

My agent asked if we could find tags on the body but im not going onto the freeway to look for em..

Our freeways in the south bay area run at around 73 mph with highway patrol present..
I tried to brake hard before impact but the c locked up and started to turn sideways in the lane with a grey honda accord at my rear passenger side and a car right behind me.

After I knew my life was in danger from the brakes I had no choice but to release and scream four letter words.

Just from the event my shoulders and back are sore...

the 3 cars left the freeway to a gas station where I was the only one with major damage.

I wish I had better luck that night but oh -well I could be dead also or have airbag burns n trama

The srs sensor is luckily is not at the bottom of the front bumper but at the top just next to the radiator on each side..

Ill post next my final repair costs when i get em

6 day lead time on parts ive been told and 5 to fix.

When I see a c on the road im so hater now... lol

Wow, what an ordeal. Sorry you had to go through it, but at least you escaped unharmed.

I'm not happy to hear about your brakes locking up and your car going sideways. If I had to guess... it would be the rears that locked?

Yup, we're adults, but sometimes filters are good things.

I agree with tk1971 about the brakes locking up. Makes me think I really need to find a big empty parking lot sometime soon and understand how my C responds under a little driving stress so I'm not overly surprised. The 6 days on parts is better than I thought would be available - but when those 11 days translate into business days.....gonna be a long wait to get your car back. Does that 5 days include painting as well?

I think I had a input into the direction of the slide... The dog appeared at the edge of the headlight beam coming towards me head first about a foot from the middle of the lane. I had a 1 foot emergency lane and a 4 foot cement divider.. So it was more like a quick counter clockwise turn and then correction and then lifted off brakes..
I don't think abs and traction control work well when the cars not straight because of my wheel input. But again it all happened under a second or so.. My skids are less than a half a c in length .

My skids on the freeway looked like it dove to the left with the front tires but I think all four locked up while I was jerking the wheel to avoid the dog dead middle of the car.. The car behind me had flashed its high beams during my initial brake use and afterwards while washer fluid blew out from under the car..

I will perform a emergency stop somewhere safe when i get the c back.
I need a alignment and maybe the main frame is bent.. They are going to measure..

In a few days I'll have a complete tear down bill.

The main thing is YOU are ok. Hitting anything at highway speeds can be very dangerous.

Hang in there and make your insurance company WORK for YOU. That's what you pay for them for all year long. Many insurance companies like to drag their feet, but happily accept the money we all pay them for insurance all year long. Tell them you want this process to go seamlessly. They might even go after the owners of the dog. This depends on the laws of your state. Is there a leash law? This would have never occurred if the dog was properly restrained, supervised/cared for. An accident that should have never happened IMHO. Something to ask your insurance carrier about. I say sad the dog was killed, but I also say the owners were very negligent in letting it run loose near an interstate no less. This could have turned out much worse and accountability is a fair question. Did the owners claim the dog? Was it a stray? Have your insurance company go after the dog owners if you know who they are, I think anyone would agree on who is liable here and it's not the dog. :) If no one claims the dog...mute this.

Another thought, I would not pay the final repair bill later on until you test drive the car and it is perfect to your satisfaction. The cosmetic damage can be repaired. Making sure the car drives straight and has future proper tire wear is a long term consideration. Potential damage to the suspension components can cause expensive problems later on. This all needs to be addressed. Have ALL repair work throughly documented.
Once you drive it away its yours.

Importantly let your insurance company know you want them to deposit the money for the repair work in YOUR account and you will provide final payment to the body shop or dealership. USAA provided this service to us and it worked great. This should provide you with some leverage to make sure the car is exactly right before you pay the final tab. After all its your money. This method worked for us when my wife hit a deer with our Honda Accord. The car was perfect when we picked it up after the body shop repaired it with OEM or original equipment Honda hood, fender, bumper etc. And trust me when we say we inspected the car even though it was paid off. The car still looks and runs great today.

For what it's worth. Best of luck!

Sorry to hear about your C accident and that poor lost pooch.

She made one payment on her Prius C and coming home from work Monday, my gal friend struck a four-point deer at 50 mph. She was virtually unscathed and the buck trotted off into the woods. The tow truck driver and body shop owner are impressed with how the C absorbed the impact. The last two photos are from the repair shop. Current estimate is $5100 but likely to climb. Frame and motors look good. Bags did not deploy.
