PIP Musings

    Drove into work this morning (30.0 miles) without using the carpool lane and got 131 MPG, which is a new high for me. Using the carpool lane I can get 85 -95MPG or so.

    We took a trip to Crater Lake National Park last week. I filled up before the trip and calculated 104MPG for my "commute" tank (400 miles). We left San Jose and headed up I-5 to to Weed (US97) and averaged 47MPG going about 72MPH and climbing into the Shasta area. With a slower pace (50 - 55MPH, we headed up to Crater Lake and back out with an average of 55MPG.

    The final tank took us through Lassen NP. From the highest point (8500 ft) and then down into Red Bluff we were able to regen almost 8miles of EV range (that was so much fun!) and still had almost 6.5 miles of EV range left when we got back to I-5 which I saved for later use. I calculated a 66MPG tank but I think I got a short fill at the Chevron station since my indicated was 60MPG which was still pretty good with all of the I-5 drivng on the way back.

    I've charged up twice at a Chargepoint station owned by Ebay in San Jose. Thanks for the free charges Ebay!

    We have 7K miles on the car so far and we are enjoying it.

    I love the carpool access!

    The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is cool.

    I'm glad they let me plug in at work!

    I can't wait to put Michelin Energy Saver A/S tires on this car. They made a big difference on my Gen II.

    better start looking for energy savers now, they've stopped making them.

    I was able to get 128MPG on my 30 mile route this AM.

    I start out with about a 12.5 - 12.9 EV range. I enter HV while I'm still leaving the neighborhood so that the 45 second warm-up is completed before I reach the freeway (101). The PIP continues to use up EV range in HV mode until it bleeds the battery down to around 10 miles or so of EV range. This leaves me at 70 - 80MPG depending on traffic. I use the 10 miles of EV to travel the last leg of the trip.

    I visited the Google campus last week. They have one parking lot there with about 50 ChargePoint chargers! :eek:
    I tried to use one with my ChargePoint card but they were restricted. :(

    I have used the Campbell Library Chargepoint charger a few times. Thanks Campbell!


    The Michelin Energy Saver A/S is still advertised on their website?

    interesting. there's another thread here by f8l? that says they are being replaced by a new model. let us know if you find some!

    I did replace my tires last week with the Michelin Energy Saver A/S. They are smoother, quieter, better handling and I have gained at least a 5% improvement in MPG. Yay!

    That is a great tip! I used to hit the HV/EV button on highway on-ramps and then wonder why I lose almost a mile of EV getting on the highway even though the engine is running. Are you sure it's exactly 45 seconds? Every time? At all ambient temperatures?
