Smart Key Unregistered from 2007 Prius

    I had my car serviced a few weeks ago and realized that one of my Smart Keys (the one I was using when I drove to the dealership) no longer works with the car. It won't unlock the doors or start the car (neither wirelessly nor when plugged in to the dash). The other fob works fine. Are there any scenarios where a Smart Key fob gets rejected from the system? Thanks!

    Did you put a new battery in it?

    Does the key work when you insert it in the dashboard slot?

    As I said, it does not work when I put it in the dashboard slot. I haven't tried a new battery yet, but everything I've read has said the key should work in the dashboard slot even with a dead battery.

    I'm not saying this is what happened but maybe the tech gave you the wrong fob back!

    If he had your fob and another fob on him, returned the car and wrong fob to you and left the car in "ready," you could have driven the car home without knowing. Your car doesn't need the right fob to keep running.

    ...Just a guess.

    I guaranty there is someone else using your dealer that has exactly the same problem. Go back and complain. It should not be difficult for them to contact other owners that had gen2 Prius there on the same day to see if they inadvertently got swapped.

    Action two if that does not work try the chicken dance method of programming.

    I like the swapped fob theory as well; how did it turn out?

    FWIW, the simple fob test is that the red LED blinks when a fob button is pushed, if the battery is ok.
