So my worse nightmare realized... a week worth of problems and no help from Toyota.

Sunday my car's gas engine starts knocking violently, I put over, check all the fluids and to make sure no wires came undone. Everything looks fine, but the knocking continues. I have the warranty (extended) so have it towed to Toyota. The tell me the oil was over filled by a quart (thanks Monro, real nice) and that the intake needs to be cleaned out. They want $340. Towed it home, we take off the air box, clean out the excess oil and do an oil change.

We start the car (first time since we towed it home from Toyota) and the Hybrid System Warning comes on, car is still knocking and shaking and it won't stay started without having your foot on the pellet. Before we brought the car home another mechanic told us with how bad it was shaking it sounds like much more then just oil in the intake, so we asked Toyota to investigate further... they said no because the intake issue wasn't warrantied we needed to pay for that first before they looked into it further.

I called Toyota and they're coming to get that car to investigate now.

Anyone know of anything specific that may cause that light to come on that isn't major?

I've only had the car a year, and though I love it... I'm afraid this may be a continuing problem in the sense I'm in for a world of hurt with a domino effect.

Oh... 2007 Prius Gen II 68k miles

I had to start the car to roll up the windows and the triangle light is gone but the check engine light is still on and shaking.

    ..sigh..

Monro Muffler, they did the oil change and over filled it. Now its corrected the car isn't running right, the engine is still shaking and the check engine light is still on. They just towed it back to the Toyota dealer service center. Sadly, they warned me they have no one to look at the car until sometime next week as their hybrid techs are on 'vacation'.

I have a feeling whatever it is isn't covered by my extended warranty, so I'm trying to troubleshoot to see if its something I can handle myself. I've found some great help on this forum for basic stuff I could take care of, this time it was a little outside what I can find anything on.

I did find a lot about the knocking and issues with the manifold, but this situation the engine keeps knocks and shaking violently while driving not just as start up. It doesn't stop.

This is not your main problem but, if you had to start the car before the windows would go up suggest a flat 12 volt battery.

The problem with this is that if the battery did go that low the codes may have bean lost.

When it was at Toyota earlier this week they didn't say any codes were shown. The check engine wasn't on until I got it home.

I was wondering if it was maybe the injectors now, couldn't that have gotten clogged or corroded from the over filled oil?

I guess I'm still used to trouble shooting my Camry and it was easier to diagnose by sound.

I did think it was about time the battery needed to be changed since we're at 68k. Think I should do it anyways? I saw I could get one at Advance Auto for $199. Looks like I should be able to change that myself.

If you buy a battery of the shelf insist they check the voltage of it before buying. If it is not at or above 12.8 volts reject it. There have been a number of reports of new batteries with low voltage "through lack of maintenance" being supplied and these batteries will have shortened live and capacity because of sulphation.

I think I will ask them to test the battery while it is there, but they have no one to even look at the car until next week. Their hybrid techs are on vacation right now.

I'm what you would call, 'broke' so I have to see what I can possibly do by myself rather then over pay Toyota. They tried to charge me $106 for the diagnostic last week as it is!

if you could start it to roll up the windows, isn't the battery okay?
