Just purchased a 07 prius with a bad engine...Has anyone done a engine swap? My replacement engine just arrived and I plan on doing the swap this weekend..It looks like the simpliest way would be to drop the whole drivetrain down, then swap engines?

    Awesome!

We're looking forward to seeing your updates...

How long has the car been not running for?

How much certainty that engine is the only problem?

Wow... So where did you score the engine?
I assume it's a low mileage used engine perhaps?
What kinda of price is an engine going for these days?

Looking forward to how it goes... And hope strange electrical oriented problems don't show up at the end... And obvious but worth repeating: Make sure you switch off the HV battery and disconnect the 12volt before you start doing anything!

Three hours to drop the engine and trans out the bottom of the car. Having a car lift is a huge help. Tonight or tomorrow will start seperating the engine and transmission.

I took a couple of photos, nothing to exciting.. first one is the eng/trans assy on the ground. It took about three hours to drop the eng/trans assy onto the two tires. Another thirty minutes to swap engines around. Six bolts and plugs and ground wires to deal with, very easy.

This next photo is lowering the car chassie back onto the eng/trans assy. The engine swap is done, and the car is running. Ten hours to do the R&R on the Prius.

Wow,that is kinda cool. I just bought an 07 also with a bad engine. Has 190k on the car.. The book gives you about 20 hours to do an engine swap I believe.. I have mine ready to pull,I am pulling mine out of the top and leaving the trans. in the car, that way I dont have to mess with the frame or steering alignment. Will let you know how it goes.. By the way congrats on getting it done so quick. I found an engine with 68 k on it for 250.00 ,but i gotta drive 1.5 hours to pick it up..

Let me know how your engine swap goes? I had found a engine with about the same miles as the one I purchased for $300.00, but it was four hours from me,plus they wanted the eng core back.

Got the engine pulled from the top. Had to pull water pump first to get it to come up thru the top.. So far I got around 4-5 hours in it..

Another question, What should I expect for fuel economy? First tank of fuel I am averaging 44.5 mpg .

Make sure the Inverter coolant is purged real good. No air in system. Easy to check put car in ready...let engine run till it warms up and shuts off then listen to the pump. Its behind the drivers headlight and has 2 hoses to it. Should sound real nice and smooth. Soft consistent whine like an aquarium pump. No hiss or interment gurgling.
Hope you have a Scan gauge to monitor engine temps too.
Also make sure engine oil is not overfilled. Tiny bit below full mark is where it should be.

    Great job btw.

lot of variables in mpg's. 44 isn't bad. some get 50-60-70. it all depends on weather, driving style trip length, topography, etc.

No need to pull water pump, just remove the lower and passenger side motor mounts. Put a jack under the trans first. Release the trans mount and lower the whole assembly down a couple of inches. The trans will now have room to move to the right. You can pull the engine up through the gap. No draining the trans, no messing with the cv axles etc. 7-8 hours =done.
unless you make the same mistake as me and forget to fully reengage the hv battery switch. turns it into hours of rechecking everything. Thanks again Patrick for the remedy.

Sorry for posting so late, got the engine switch done........it actually was not to bad.. So far I am averaging around 46 MPG. which is pretty good I think.. One question I have is something in the front sounds loud, like a loud growl or like a bad bearing, but the wheel brg. seems tight and the driver side axle has a little play in it but does not seem to be the cause..Am I looking at a bad transmission ? I just changed the oil in it and it looked terrible.. Any thoughts??? Thanks for all your great posts!!!!
