Why did Toyota implement the rear door handle electronics differently? It's obviously less efficient, slower and quite frankly a major pain most of the time. It's not at all intuitive and if I have to "pull" on the handle for a few seconds before it releases, then I would consider it a bad design. The side door handle release simultaneous with your pulling on the handle. It's wonderfully responsive to the point that you practically forget it was locked to begin with. I suppose I'm just having an issue with the hatch release because I'm usually standing there with arms full of something heavy and awkward and feeling frustrated at massaging a door handle...

I've taught myself to push slightly, wait for the beep, then give it the yank. Second nature now.

Likewise with Twindad, I'm used to it, takes maybe 1/2-3/4 second, I'm used to it, grab, slightly squeeze the button wait for beep, open...no big deal. Not sure why it doesn't respond like the front doors though, and agree that it would be nice if it did.

This glitch apparently had been corrected (unless there is some parts/software difference between US and Europe).

No hatch opening delay on my new car.

Let's hope the reason for Dave's site being down is that a major upgrade to his "mods available" list for the 2004 is being done including photos. From the looks of the number of hits his site is receiving per day he should begin planning for his early retirement - his fortune is soon in coming.

Let's all keep our fingers crossed!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DAVE!

Half the sites I tried to visit this morning aren't responding, like Coastaletech.com. Maybe another round of worm infection?...

If you have the "buttonless" mod or any of them really is there an indication that EV mode is activated? Anything on the dash or computer to indicate it? On the original button does it light up?

When you activate EV mode on a "moded" N. American Prius what happens is that if you are on the consumption screen there is a 'beep' and the screen switches to the Energy screen. This works pretty well for me b/c I'm on the consumption screen 95+% of the time anyway.

There are 3 beeps when EV is disabled by the car (ie hard accelertion, battery too low, etc). There are no beeps if you manually disable EV mode by hitting the button again so you might not be sure if it really went out or not, but usually you can tell b/c the ICE will almost always immediately kick in.

Other than that, No, there is no indication of what mode you're in. I don't think that's a big issue though. You know when you turned it on, you know when it went off or you turned it off, power is less than with ICE and the Energy screen will be on unless you manually switch back to consumption.

On the Japanese/Euro models there's a little yellow car with EV on the dash that is on when in EV mode. I would like to have it, but can live without.

OK, it looks like Coastal Dave has the EV Button Kits up for sale!!! I almost missed it, since he only added the 'now available for order' text at the end of the existing text after the second photo. He's also split the secure order form into two forms, one for 2004 only, and the other for Classic models. List price for the kit is $45.

Dave - can you put something on your home page that makes it really obvious when you've added an item? Much thanks.

These EV kits one can buy, once installed, any possibility this side installation will void Toyota's warranties?

The video input options allows you to connect a DVD player and be able to hear it in the car's speakers right? I really want one. I also remember seeing that one picture of Coastal Dave's DVD player that fit perfectly in that little spot under the radio. Do you think he will sell a kit to allow that to fit in ours too? And when he says "Coming Soon" what time frame does that mean. I am going to Vegas for the 4th of July. DO you think he will have that done by then. Thanks

Dumb question: Will Coastal Dave be in Vegas for a trade show during the 4th? I thought CoastalTech was based in Florida.
