    Hello fellow Prius owners,

just yesterday, my left headlight is not working. When i turn the headlight knob anticlockwise (sorry dont know how to describe that) only the right light comes ON. The left one remains off. When i activate the high beam, both work. so to summarize, in highbeam mode, both work, but in low beam mode, only the right one works. Can anyone suggest what to do? do i need to replace the bulb? is it a DIY thing or do i need to go to the Stealership to get it fixed? I would appreciate your response....

Change the pair yourself, for matching output, and the other one is fixin' to go too. Trust me..

Make it easier on yourself, undo the harness before you take the bulb out, install replacement in the reversed order.

Also, I've heard of carbon build up causing both lights to go out at the same time. Might want to pull the plug off the light and see if it just needs to be cleaned. I have not tried it yet, both my headlights are working fine.

    JZ's right.
It's a semi-easy replacement, and you really should do both at once.
If you take it to the stealership, you really should have both done at once(!!) since you're probably already getting the SHAFT-O-RAMA with a bulb replacement, and if you had to come to the same dealership the following week to get the other one replaced??? Well....one reason that sometimes there is a loud TV in the waiting room is so that you can't hear the mechanics laughing.
OK...so some people think that I'm a little jaded where stealerships are concerned.
Here's where you can prove me wrong.
    Headlight Insert (halogen)....$10-20
    0.5 hrs labor........$40-80
So that means that on the low side you're looking at $50..and on the high side, you're looking at about $100. Price the replacement and decide for yourself.
Me? I'd get the bulbs for $20 and replace them myself. $30 is not a LOT of money for me, but it's worth the effort. If you're one of the one-percenters out there, well.....that's what dealerships are for.
I think that an $80 hourly labor rate is fair, and I think that if it takes a GEN-U-INE Toyota repairperson more than 15 minutes to replace them then he or she should consider doing something else for a living. Generally speaking, labor rates for repair shops have a minimum and I'm used to that being 0.5.
    The bulb(s) aren't that pricey.
    I just checked.....they're about $8-10 apiece.
Like I said....go to the dealer and decide for yourself. Take money, a check, or credit card when you do.
That takes us to another of my favorite topics:
You're probably asking yourself: "Self?...... How do I replace the bulbs?"
    Easy.
    Google....Youtube.
    Done.
    That's MY go-to guide.
    YMMV.
Personally? I think that the search function in this forum is about as useful as a trip to the dealership is thrifty.
However (comma!) That might just be ME being me again.
Try both and decide for yourself.
    I just did....and I timed myself.
23 seconds from browser launch to video play describing the replacement procedure for a 2010 G3 headlamp.
    Gotta Loooooove the internet. :D
If you can do this faster with the forum search function then......you're smarter than I generally am, which really isn't that high a bar to set for yourself.
Yes....I know how to use Boolean search operators.
    just not that well.... ;)

EDIT: JZ caught this one for me, and I wasn't clear about it, but by BOTH I mean left and right......not high and low. Sorry for the poor clarity. What can I say??? I used to work for the government. LOTS and LOTS of information....Concise and accurate info??? Not my department. :D

Thanks guys for the response.... Just a quick question, do i need to buy it ONLY for LOW BEAM or HIGH BEAM?
The reason I ask is because I am searching the website of a local parts store and they have listing for 2 categories, low and high

Just low beam, one pair, part # H11. Do not bother with the highbeams as they are seldom used.

Just replaced my low beam headlight bulbs with H11 Silverstar Ultra lights after watching a YouTube video on how to change low beam bulbs on a Gen III. They cost about $40 for the pair at Amazon. It took me about 10 minutes, and I would likely recommend the upgrade if you want better visibility at night. If you have a 10mm socket set, you are ready for the task. On a scale of 1 - 10 for difficulty, I would rate this DIY a 2.

Check it as soon as possible and make sure the bulbs seal againt the housings well. Otherwise you might end up with water condensation inside of the housings.
