Regardless of what vehicles are made in the future, I will never forget the Model S.

 

Aside from various Porsches I have owned, Autsin Healys and a few others, my most fun was my 86 Vanagon
Syncro Westy. Four wheel drive, full camper, with the right tires, it was unstoppable. I plowed snow with the bumber, drove through thigh deep mud, drove some crazy back roads to some pretty cool spots, that even the full size pickups dared not go!

I bought it for $8k, drove it 100k miles, never did a major repair, and sold it with leaking head gaskets for $14k. If I still had it it might be worth closer to $30k.

The most fun... Hmmmmm...

I've had lots of different vehicles over the years... let's see...

Straight Track = 1941 Chevy Master Deluxe... it was an ET car and had several different motors over time... my first tilt front end car... truely spacious riding around when not at the racetrack.
Curved Track = Mazda Miata... made me feel better than when I had TR4... nimble, and with a turbo, a competitor.
Out and about the sticks = 1969 VW Combi Hardtop... darn thing went everywhere and always made it home... it was the only car that would lul my first borne to sleep when running.
Out and about town = The 23 T-bucket... it turned heads our way every day we drove it... pain to keep clean though.

 

Besides my Prius?

Probably my Geo Metro. It zipped around the city like nobody's business on very little gas, and best of all could park in places where if it were just a couple of inches longer it couldn't have parked in.

 

I had a 1991 Dodge Spirit R/T. Fastest production family sedan in that time. 224hp, 2.2l Garrett turbocharged, intercooled, lotus 16v head. 0-60mph in 5 seconds. Total sleeper car. I loved it.

I also really liked the Envoy I just got rid of to buy the Prius. It never let me down and I could tow my boats with it, often pushing it over its tow rating but with 4.10 ratio axles, it was a rockstar. I ended up doing the e-fan mod for mpg's and HP, and getting the PCM tuned.

My other favorite car that I kick myself in the butt for selling was my 1987 Chrysler New Yorker turbo. The car talked!!! It was a blast to drive and the turbo was nice. Theres one JUST like the one I owned for sale on ebay (mine had leather though) Chrysler : New Yorker NY in Chrysler | eBay Motors ... Ive been eyeing it...lol

Im relatively young still (32) but used to buy, fix, and sell cars... some I'd keep for a while and drive. In 16 years, Ive titled ~40 vehicles. If I saw a car that I wanted to own, I'd buy it. Get sick of it 6 months later, and sell it.

Now that Im a little older and in my 30's Im more worried about my 401k these days So I just have the Prius now and 2 boats. But I'd love to get a Trailblazer SS or a Dodge Dakota in addition to the Prius to help me with my dirty work!

 

1990 Ford Crown Victoria station wagon. 302 V8, rear jump seats so it seats 8 and about 20 feet long. Love it, still have it.

 

The most fun was a 1994 Mercedes CL600. It was a bargain: new it was HK$ 2.2 million (US$ 283,000), but I bought it when it was ten years old for HK$ 60,000 (US$ 7,700) (Hong Kong people don't like buying used cars, so they depreciate to an extraordinary degree - this had lost 98% of its value). It only had 60,000kms on it, and it was in great condition. It was incredibly fast, extraordinarily comfortable, and full of toys. I loved it.
As far as beaters are concerned, I think my record was a 1988 Saab 9000, in 2002. I'd just set up my own company so money was fairly tight. My previous car had died (long story), and one of my wife's friends was coming to HK with her son to visit us. We had to pick them up and drop them off at the airport, and two return taxi fares from our house to the airport would have been HK$ 1,200 (US$ 155). So I bought this Saab instead - at HK$ 1,000 (US$ 130), it was cheaper than a taxi.
It lasted six months, which was good. And in a city full of brand-new Porsches, Mercs and Ferraris, it kind of stood out. HK has very aggressive drivers, but everyone was very cautious around me: if someone in a nice, shiny expensive car tried to squeeze in front of me in a traffic jam, I'd beep the horn, point at my battered, rusted front wings, fold my arms, and keep going.

 

Definitely the Prius, but then again, I don't have an all electric car.

 

3 cylinder?

 

Yup. But still made it up those San Francisco hills no problem.

 

^ They made a turbo version in some of the other Suzuki variants of the metro. I can't remember the names off of the top of my head, but it only added about 20 or so hp but it about doubled the torque. Had a high school friend that had one, fun little car.

 

My friend had a Metro convertible in high school. The weight training class guys would go out to the parking lot and lift the car, putting it sideways in its parking spot because it was so lite!! She'd be so mad when we got out of school and she had to wait for the cars around her to move first so she could get out of the spot

 

The most fun car I ever owned was my '66 Ford Econoline Van with two windows in the rear cargo door I purchased in 1971. All my friends had the VW microbus because it was cool, but I couldn't stand the slow anemic pace no matter how mellow it was. And since I lived in the San Francisco area negotiating the hills was a hairy experience in a microbus especially when in a different state of consciousness not knowing for sure whether it would make it up the hill.

Soon I had shag carpeting installed with Salvation Army sourced bed, a real stereo radio with big speakers and Indian Madras print cloth for privacy and I was all set. The late sixties and early seventies was a very special era especially in the Bay area and yes, don't come a knockin' when you see my van a rockin'.

I didn't realise that you had to specify what you were planning to do on the carpet before you could buy it.

 

6-speed manual BMW 325i. Drove it like a race car every day. Once put it into the side of a mountain on Stunt Rd. Had so much fun in the car CA took away my license.

Needless to say I love having a car that is meant to drive slow now. Way faster than the bus and the bike.

 

If it's reliable, there is a great feeling driving a really cheap beater vehicle.

When I was young, I made my share of vehicle purchases that would be considered various degrees of unwise. But one I made that I enjoyed was a that of an old 1976 Toyota Corolla. It was literally parked in the neighborhood and sold by a neighbor for $400.

It was Root Beer Brown and unapologetically ugly. It was approaching 20 years old when I bought it...and the engine was slowly dying as you could hear piston rod rattle upon start up and shut off..but it was still very reliable.

I loved owning a vehicle that cost less than most bicycles. I could unwisely embrace road rage, as I didn't really care if the BMW hit me....I was insured, and the most I could lose was a $400.00 dollar vehicle, so GO AHEAD try and cut me off...I don't really care...I've got very little to lose here.

And there also was a lot of freedom in owning a vehicle so old and ugly that appearance maintenance was simply useless. Anything more than a occasional $5.00 drive thru, was a total waste of time. It's beauty, was it's ugliness. Wax it? Ha! Polish it? Ha! Worry about swirl marks? That era passed along with the Jimmy Carter administration.

My family had owned Toyota's off an on, throughout my childhood. But this Corolla really cemented my admiration for Toyota build quality. Even in the very twilight of it's useable existence that Corolla remained amazingly reliable. I eventually used it as a token trade in on a new vehicle. But it was still running and viable as transportation even at that point. Part of me secretly regrets that I just didn't keep it forever, or until it absolutely stopped running. Who knows, it might still be with me today.

 

My most fun car? My first, primarily because it was my first. (A mid-80s Volvo wagon with three pedals.) All it did was take me places I wanted to go, for the first time in my life, and I don't think I could ever feel the same driving any other vehicle. I still remember what it felt like to strike out on my own for the first time without a parent in the passenger seat. Teaching myself (more or less) to drive a stick shift at the same time...which initially seemed impossible...made the experience all the more exhilarating. Plus, it was a decade-old Volvo. Old Volvos need to be maintained! When things went wrong I just broke out the Haynes manual and gave it my best shot. Putting that thing back together and having it work properly was as much an accomplishment as being able to drive it in the first place. I loved that car to death. There are days I wish I still had it. It would be an impractical, unsafe rust bucket by now, but memory has a way of censoring that sort of thing.
