Dead touch screen on multi function display

I've recently developed a similar problem with my 2004 Prius. It's got factory GPS, Bluetooth hands-free, the works. (I bought it used a couple of years ago.) Not only won't the touch screen respond, but it doesn't show any information, or shows only partial information. After awhile, it may come back on; or not. A very reliable Toyota dealer in metro Atlanta told me Toyota wanted over $5,000 for the part! Like you, I said, well, I can live with the problem, esp. since the audio and climate controls on the steering wheel still worked. And like you, I soon realized that there were a lot of things I actually couldn't do, starting with the GPS. Somehow it's connected to the audio system, which also cuts in and out, and leaves the Bluetooth phone connection unreliable.

I consider $5,000 (about 1/4 the original price of the car!) a total rip-off, esp. since the car is barely out of warranty (it only has 110K on it), so I've been thinking of doing the kind of searches you did. Once before, I got a replacement stereo for $100 on eBay, instead of the $1000 Toyota wanted.

So I'm very encouraged to hear of your success. What site did you use to search for the part and get in touch with all the salvage yards?

My MFD died on me in the 2008 also. I found lots of threads about it but Toyota said they never seen the issue before. Typical.

I wish I could tell you but I can't remember the name of the site and I have since cleared my browser history and was unable to find it again. After being contacted by someone at the yard who eventually sold me the part, the remainder of the transaction was carried out over the phone.

Yeah, I noticed that too, and it's got me thinking. I replaced the battery (expensive!) in May 2010. I would hope I wouldn't have to do it again so soon. However, since I'm also experiencing the very annoying red-triangle warning about the headlight-leveling system, which I've seen may also be related to 12V battery failure, I am going to investigate that battery before spending bucks on anything else.

Installed it in my 2004....no issues.

 

So, here's the outcome of my tale: I ended up just looking on eBay, and was fortunate to find that several used MFDs were available. I settled on one that both was inexpensive and had a good warranty. It was from LKQ, and cost about $325. My longtime mechanic installed it for $160. His shop had never done this before, and I printed out the instructions from Prius MFD Touchscreen Repair, which he found helpful. (I corresponded with Steve at that site about whether he had a unit he could sell me, but they don't do that any more. I'd have had to take it out, or have it taken out, and ship it to him for repair, which seemed overly complicated.)

The used unit (out of a 2005 vehicle) is working well after a brief tryout. I'm having a little problem with Bluetooth connection with my phone, but I'm sure I'll get that straightened out.

Thanks for folks' help here. One further outcome of this is that I've lost a lot of confidence in Toyota's manufacturing process and regard for their customers: again, they want $5,000 for a new MFD unit. Think a minute about how many high-powered standalone computers you could buy for $5,000. There's no way to justify a price like that.

 

my husband had the same problem with his 2006 Prius. Half of the MFD was frozen, so the car was stuck on one radio station and one A/C setting. The dealership wanted $1,000 for just the part. However, my husband is in the insurance business so tracked down the part from a junkyard in Fontana, CA (which is junkyard central, apparently). The part they gave him turned out to be incompatible with his car; however, on the second visit he took the part # with him and got the correct part. (It may be advisable to get a guarantee that you can return the part if it doesn't work for some reason.) The second time, the part worked fine, and total cost was $350/used MFD plus $110 dealer installation. It's too bad that this problem is showing up after warranty; maybe it will turn into a recall issue if there are enough complaints. It does affect the safe operation of the car.

 

I have the same issue. Does anyone know if we can downgrade to a non nav from nav? Parts appear much cheaper. Thanks for any help!

 

I think you'll also lose some other advanced features, like the Bluetooth for phones. I'm in the same situation, right now, choosing a part to replace my 86110-47220 (2007 w/Nav). Think I might have to pay about 500, that's what I'm seeing.

 

Hey, I'm seeing some EBay listings for part 86110-47071, and it says it's got the nav, and is for model years 05-09. Does anyone know if this will work in my Prius, which had a 86110-47220? (My screen has been totally dead for months.)

 

You have to use the same part number or the connections will be different. Some have back-up camera, JBL and/or bluetooth and some don't. Very simple repair the only tools required are 10mm socket and phillips screwdriver. Find a cheap one that has your exact part number on eBay or Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market. I have replaced about 10 of these and have paid between $60-$175 the ones with nav are usually more expensive. Search youtube for a video showing dash or radio removal and just do it. Save some money.

 

Is there a way to find out the part you need without removing it first? Replacement doesn't look TOO difficult, but if possible I'd like to only do the dash removal bit once (I always have a habit of breaking or bending those plastic clips that hold everything in).

 

Nevermind, I just popped open the panel after watching a youtube video that lasted all of 6 minutes to completely replace it. 47230... of course it would be the one that I don't see for $100
