Hi all, I am a proud owner of a 2008 Prius with 117,000 miles on it. actually my daughter has driven the car almost exclusively except for the first six months. Anyway, during her travels today a series of lights came on including the Malfunction light, engine light and on the screen the hybrid trouble light (the icon of a car with an explamation point in it). I took the car to advanced auto and had the codes read and they were 1. P3193 Fuel Run Out CURRENT, 2. P0A93 Inverter A cooling System performance PENDING and 3. C1241 Low batterry positive voltage or Abnormally high batterry positive voltage. I have been reading through the forum and I am a little nervous with the inverter code and wonder what is the differrence between it being a pending code as oppossed to a current code. I am also curious if the C1241 is a engine battery code and if a bad battery would/could make the other codes. I guess I am asking if I might get lucky and just need a new engine battery? and of course if the Inverter code means anything what kind of charge am I looking at for repair? Thank you in advance for any help.

Have you had the inverter coolant pump replaced by Toyota per their recent recall for the 2008? Check the Toyota recall web site.

No I have not, I did not know about it. I will definitely check into this and maybe I will get lucky. Thank You very much for letting Me know about this, it is appreciated.

What's the status of the 12V Battery?

I'm not sure except that I did get the C1241 code which I believe is telling me to replace the 12volt battery. could that battery being bad give false readings on the other codes? I checked discount Auto and they sell an Optima battery for the prius ($200.00 with a 25% discount making it $150.00). I wuld pick up the battery and put it in myself and save some money over the dealer, should probably do this anyway. The Prius does have the inverter recall as howardbc pointed out along with the overspeed one and possibly the steering one so a trip to the dealer woulod not hurt anyway. Your thoughts on the battery would be appreciated, thanks again.

I have a 2008 Prius w/67,000mils. About 2 wks ago when I was driving, the main screen just went blanc and my Prius died...so I had to towed it to a dealer. First they said it's not battery, but something electrical and couldn't figure out what's wrong. So I went to Toyota official recall site and found out about the water pump recall on 2004-2009 Prius. The next day the dealer; Bob Tyler Toyota, the only Toyota dealer in Pensacola, Fl. said it's water pump and the aux battery which cost $250 to replace. I already knew about the recall at the point, so I told them donot replace battery, if they did, I want my old battery back in. Then they said if I don't replace the battery, I won't be able to leave the dealer. So I said that's fine. Then I called Toyota Customer Relations on the recall site and reported about the incident. Today I just picked up my Prius w/no charge and they said they charged battery for me! My question is how long the aux battery supposed to last. I drive my Prius everyday at least 6 mils and play music with A/C or heater.

    1. Well, did the car actually run out of fuel? If yes, that might cause the DC/DC converter to shut down which would result in 3.

    2. The pending code means that the car had a problem with the inverter system overheating in the past, although it was not a problem at the time the codes were read. As previously suggested, it is likely that the inverter coolant pump has failed, which is the subject of recall. When the Prius is READY, look at the inverter coolant reservoir for fluid turbulence. If you don't see this then the pump is inoperative.

If the car had run out of fuel, I would recommend that you strongly encourage your daughter to refuel no later than when she sees two bars appear on the fuel gauge.

A six mile daily drive isn't much and will result in the 12V battery remaining in a partially discharged state. Your 12V battery is 4-5 years old and, under conditions of low vehicle usage, it would not surprise me if you should find that your 12V battery will not hold a charge. Should this be the case, you'll find out soon enough - when your car refuses to start.

Thanks for your reply! So are you saying it's time for me to replace the 12V battery?

well. I had the vehicle towed to Toyota and the comments from them so far is that there is a recall on the floor mat (what a joke that rec all is) and that the inverter is not a recall and that Toyota has not decided what to do with that yet. I told her that according to the national highway safety transportation system it is a recall which calls for Toyota to change the water pump at no charge and the campaign number is 12v536000. I am now waiting for their call back on the diagnostics and cost. I expect they will want to change the battery, if they quote $250.00 I will probably have them do it as it is an expensive battery that I found with discount for $162. as far as running out of gas, my daughter has not run out of gas and there was fuel in it, I did not check for water flow in the reservoir before towing to dealer, damn, I hope I am not in for a ride with this dealer. I gave all the information to 3 different people in service and when it was towed in they asked me by name what it was here for? unbelievable. I will post the results and do appreciate all the insight I am getting in the forum. Thank You

Well, since the 12V battery has been charged, I suppose you should drive the car and see what happens. If you should find that the cabin lights are dimmer than normal when you first enter the car, that is a clue the 12V battery is beginning to fade and should be replaced.

O.K. Thank you so much for your info! I'll keep eye on the sign. Although I had my 12V tested and the battery was "good but recharge," so like you've already mentioned, I need to drive more...

Hope it get's straightened out. As cheap insurance you may want to swap out the 5 year old battery. Optima's are great.

Toyota told me the inverter is a campaign, not a recall but they would do the work for free anyway because the recall is coming? Then they said my engines pump is also bad and the belt (timing?) is also bad and that would be about $370.00 and they recommend the air filter and cabin air filter be changed. I said to go ahead and do the work because the car was already towed there and change the oil while your at it. The car has well over 100,000 miles on it (not sure how many, I said 117,000 but that is the other car) so needing the work did not sound unreasonable, the price sounded a bit high but? Anyone else have their engine water pump changed and the belt (timing or serpentine?)

The Prius does not have a timing belt it uses a chain. It does have a belt that drives the water pump and can be bought for about $20 and there should be no labor charge to change it if they are fitting a new pump because it has to be taken off anyway to fit a new pump.

The cabin and engine air filters you can change yourself in under 10 mins for both, if you can open a suit case you can do these that's how easy it is

Brit Prius. I almost did not put that I let them change the filters because I did not want to get a response like this, because I know it is easy to change as well. That being said I did say being the car was already towed to the dealer, I let them do the work. I realize that I paid to have it done and being someone who usually does everything himself that was tough. I did also realize after I left the post that the belt was a serpentine and yes the labor charge for it is part of the pump changeout, if I knew that pump was bad and the car was running I would have had a friend who is a mechanic change it and saved money (I am presently recovering from fusion surgery in my back, L2-S1, I would have changed the filters in my present condition but not the pump) but again, being it was already at the dealer needing the inverter water pump, I let them do the work. I do appreciate the response, the info would have helped greatly under normal conditions. Do You know anything about the inverter/Hybrid system? I don't. It looks like it is regular 100,000 mile coolant in a closed system which would mean that the coolant needs to be changed along with the radiators coolant every 100,000 miles, is that correct?

LC39B sorry if I sounded as if I was scolding you in my post as I had not understood that you normally worked on your vehicle.

The first coolant "engine and hybrid system change is at 120,000 miles and 60,000 miles there after. If you have had the recall work done on the hybrid pump this coolant should have been changed as this is in the instructions to the dealer as part of the campain, the engine coolant will be changed with the engine coolant pump.

Sorry to hear about your back and I know the pain you are going through as I have very similar problems. Good luck for the future and a quick recovery.

    John (Britprius).

    John,

My Manual says change the coolants (Toyota SLL) at 100k miles and every 50k miles thereafter.

Sorry in the UK the service intervals are somewhat different to the US so things can get confused. For example the oil change interval here is 10,000 miles, and there is no recommendation for wheel rotation.
