My 2006 Prius is now in the hand of my brother and he is enjoying driving it. His other rides are Acura NSX and Honda CB-1.

I went from a 600 rear wheel horsepower Toyota Supra Turbo to this PIPA. All my friends think I'm nuts!
I tell them I've been driving either a Supra or an MR2 for the past 20 years, and so this is my "reverse mid-life crisis" car. ;-) It's nice paying $20 in gas after 3 weeks, instead of $70-$80 per week!

That's why I bought a used 2010 Prius for under 18k that had only 10,500 miles on it. I too can't justify paying that much for a car. The whole issue for me is to get to point A to point B and back again and save as much money on gas as possible. (You can have all the fancy accessories I don't need them) When they hear that their cool with the purchase amount because their used to buying cars for under 20k.

Why not get a bike? That's an efficient way of getting to point A to B. :p

That does help clear the mud.
Lots of things get you from point A to B... Skateboard, moped etc....

We all have expectations of ride, comfort and possibly extra goodies that make the trip more pleasurable.

Who cares what other people think about the price of a Prius. They can use their money the way they want and I use mine as I want. This is part of the beauty of free choice.

I think if you tell anyone what your real MPG is (my current is 175 MPG and I'm pretty proud of that) then their eyes get big and who cares that I paid in the 40's for a tricked out PIP! :)

Between paying $100 less than actual dealer invoice (after the destination charge), the $34k I got from insurance for the Supra, (long story), $1500 cash incentive from Toyota, $1000 incentive for financing $5k with TFS, $1500 Oregon income tax incentive, and $2500 Federal income tax incentive, I ended up with about $1k "extra". That will pay for window tinting, clear bra, all weather mats, and door edge guards with money left over.

Re: your co-worker thinks you overpaid / should have stuck with a regular prius...

I disagree - because let's say you bought a "regular prius" and I'm not an expert at all the regular models, but let's say it was 27K and about 30K out the door and your Plug-In base is 33K and about 36K out the door... as long as you plug-in regularly you are actually paying less than a regular Prius. I don't have time to do the math but it won't take long for you to surpass that $6000.00 savings at the pump compared to a regular Prius, and where I live I see regular Prius drivers stomping on it all the time so i doubt they are getting close to 50MPG. You got way better deal at the pump!

My wife, son and I don't stomp it but close.... Everyone drives pretty aggressively in the sense of how fast we take off... Everyone gets 45 - 48mpg...I get 47 - 50 in my gen 3, if I'm really wiped and drive slow and lazy, mine jumps to 55mpg.

Driving a GenII like I stole it with winter snow tires still nets me 48mpg ish when I go to fill up. I accelerate fast, slow down slowly, that's all there is to it. :)

Yeah your math is unfortunately way off on pretty much every account :) but it's still an awesome car and I love it every time I get in.

How is my math way off on every account? Mine was about 33K and 36K out the door. My comment was to help someone through their insecurities about what a co-worker told he or she. Your comment is way off pretty much on every account.

There are quite a few Prii owners who also drive a performance car. My other car is a Corvette that is presently at 550hp. Both cars do what they are supposed to do very well.

    - Electricity is not free, especially in Long Island.
    - The PiP is more expensive and thus will cost a bit more to insure.
    - The savings come almost entirely from EV miles. But the short EV range means you can't drive sufficient EV miles per year to recover the costs.

Battery prices need to drop to make plug-ins cost efficent. Especially Toyota's battery prices.
