when and where did you buy the car?
take a look at the pricing spreadsheet (linked in the FAQ) for what today's prices on this car are
also, your $6k differential is way off. even at MSRP, the price difference is that large before government incentives, which in California amount to $4k. So your difference is now only $2k.
Then you have to consider things like carpool lane usage. what's that worth? if you live in the bay area and drive over any of the bridges…that's a savings of $3.50 daily. and also the cost of time.
and finally, yes, electricity is not free. for people who can switch to a TOU rate plan and charge at night, the cost per mile is generally in the 5-7¢/mi range. but on gas, with prices at $3.50/gal, you're looking at 7¢/mi anyway. so your cost savings are minimal.

When I ask the dealers for my PIP's quote, it came back with every confusing numbers like your price - $41K. You need to be more specific with your number. Is it including tax, document and registration, Toyota rebate, 2012/2013 model, extended warranty, prepaid maintenance, additional insurance, and Basic/Advance trim?

Pretty sure he was just referring to the MSRP. Just because you paid $7k below doesn't somehow instantly devalue the car lol.

I am sorry. I did not read your thread carefully. You already said PIPA for $41k.

Your neighbor was shocked? Are you sure they know what you really get? I find I have hard time to explain to my neighbors and friends what a PIP is. I cannot imagine they know your PIPA comes with the radar. Most people think $41k can buy a Lexus, but they do not know what are the features in PIPA.

i think the market spoke very clearly that 41k was too high of a price for this car. this is why as the year closed, we had people buying it for $6-7k below MSRP factoring in both TFS and dealer incentives.
also, the quality and fit of the interior on a Lexus will trump a Prius any day, no amount of "features" can make up for that.

And that's the issue that Toyota has to overcome. People like brand names and people think the Prius is a $30k car. They cannot fathom a $40k Prius because they'd rather have a luxury nameplate that "tells" people that they've spent that much money (Heck, there are people I know that question why people buy a Prius when a Lexus CT200h goes for similar money. It's clear they only value the name brand and other things don't factor in).

Heck, I could've bought a 300hp WRX STi for the same price as my Prius but I didn't. I didn't want to deal with expensive insurance, premium fuel (and frequent refuelling of such liquid) and expensive tyres. It's all about what you prefer and what you value.

Totally! My wife wanted the CT too, but I bought her the Prius IV because it is more roomy, and has solar panel and 10 MPG more. I do not want to buy the CT just for the sake of the L logo.

heh, i think you quoted the wrong post :) i'd argue that for people who value interior comfort (and rarely have more than 3 people in the car), a CT is in fact the better choice.

Yep, there's a reason people pay 80.00 bucks for wore out looking jeans that have the name brand boldly posted for all to see.

Functionality is only a small part of the purchase... I'm guilty of it. Most of my toys cost way more than a cheap version that does the same function.

Doing it in "class" means different things to different people... Often the market tries to tell us what's funny, what's valuable, what's our duty, or what defines "luxury".
They are constantly trying to reprogram our brains.

Is it how much room we have to sprawl out? Whether the panel is plastic or wood? Whether we spent a lot or little for the same gold ring? How about how techy it is, how much instrumentation feedback we have? How fast it will go from 0 to 60?

Sports cars many consider luxury even though it has no back seats and your crammed in like a sardine?

And old beater restored to original?

I guess how we define luxury and value varies can be based on whether we're impressing friends who have an expectation, or whether we want to be different from everybody else just for the sake of having what they can't afford.

    40k gives lots of options.

For me, if you take away the gas mileage, prius is not the best choice for 40k, but all things considered some want cutting edge phones, some just wanna make a call. Who's right?... No none or everyone?
For those that don't mind paying exxon instead of Toyota, there are other options.

I hear all sorts of weird comments about my Prius like - you have to plug those in, right? Or, don't those cost $40,000? I'm hanging around with the wrong people :0

I asked my bro in law about the ride quality as we were zipping down the freeway. He said it's not as composed of ride quality as his 2002 Camry, that the Prius feels more bumpy. Smaller tires contributes to that.

Hybrids are still a tough sell, obviously. Camry hybrid LE is $3,400 more than regular LE, which takes 80k miles to make up, plus another 80k to save up to replace the hybrid battery. It's worse economically speaking for plug-ins, so buyers must want them because the way they operate. That's how it is for me - I bought the Prius largely for the way it runs, and secondly because it meets my needs. I don't like old fashioned cars that idle away all the time, at least not for daily driving, but yeah, I'd like to sport a Mazdaspeed3 or SLT around on backroads. No make that sportbike instead.

    ooop, back to topic.

    They're not just edumacated yet.

Tell them, no that would be the Chevys, but plugging in just raises your gas mileage higher than its regular 50+ mpg.

    That'll shut Em up!

I agree, they only try to leverage what you have to justify what they have.

They only care about their own.

Exactly, kind of like our kids, no matter how someone expresses the wonders of their child or brags it won't change my opinion one bit as to which child I think is the winner. ;-D
