I am fine with regular old AM and FM stations, NPR related, and use of my iPhone music, but I'd like to know if I'll see a big drop in reception quality if I drop the Sirius service. Anyone have any thoughts?

    Thanks!

Thanks - I thought the satellite service got reception through another way than without. So, I thought it would be different.

AM, FM, Disk will work fine. Satellite will not work.

The Satellite antenna and receiver is a totally different one than the AM/FM.

So, my question is if the reception received when NOT on satellite sounds as clear:good as the reception on satellite channels.

It depends on where you are. Satellite works "everywhere", AM and FM only withing some distance of the station. "Everywhere" for the satellite has some problems in deep canyons and tall forests.

What is your reception for AM/FM like now? It will be exactly the same if you drop XM. There is absolutely no correlation between the two signals.

The signal for satellite radio is much better and sends a wider range of frequencies and higher quality audio. Its also much higher quality than mp3 files, but with the stock speakers and depending on your ears it may not be very noticeable. You can do a comparison before the satellite trial runs out.

    Hi Lisa,
I did not renew either. Once it is cancelled, you get just CH1 - I believe which is basically a continuous commercial for SiriusXM. CH0 (zero) shows your unique XM codes. Every now and then I get some free sample time of a few channels. If you hold out and they call you, you can get it for less than half price, but the taxes and fees bump it back up. I mainly use my IPOD now. My Wife has a Prius 3 also and I think her Radio head unit is better than the Premium NAV unit that came with my Prius 5 - Hers even has 3d maps!

I take back my previous statement. Erica here helped me get my account fixed. Anyone with 3 free years of xm data access should get just that. 3 free years. regardless of whether you have xm music or not

During Hurricane Sandy, Sirius/XM ran the Weather Channel audio on CH1. Great idea and a potential life-saver for folks.

I better question is if you do not renew SiriusXM, how will your MPG’s be effected? The answer is the same. They have nothing to do with each other.

    - FM/AM uses their own antennas and local radio stations broadcast with limited range.
    - SiriusXM uses a cluster of satellites and planes sometimes to broadcast their signal to their subscribers and the unit that receives it has their own antenna.
    - The Prius uses gas to power the car.

None of these things affect the other.

A few FM stations, z100 for example, are carried by XM. The reception on those few stations may be worse if you drop XM and tune those stations through your FM radio. Those stations will, of course, l be completely missing if you're completely out of FM range.

    Otherwise pp are correct.

My experience with Siruis/XM is that the audio quality is significantly WORSE than MP3 - or at last the MP3's that I've created. My MP3 files are encoded at a variable bit rate that averages around 190-200 kb/s. Subjectively, satellite radio sounds to my ears like a 96-128 kb/s stream - too many "shimmery" artifacts in the audio that ended up with me abandoning the service.

The SiriusXM reception in my car is by far worse than FM radio reception. When I go by a two-story building, the satellite radio cuts out. I did not renew after my three month trial, it's not worth $20 / month, and they weren't willing to give me a deal.

If you call XM before your service free 90 day trial ends you can get Select for half price about $8 a month plus taxes or about $97 for a year. If you say I'm not sure can you do better they throw in another 3 months free.

No, I wanted the premier package, they weren't willing to discount. Previously I had been with Sirius for 5+ years and they were always willing to give me great deals. And now they want $4 / month for online listening... I'm gone!
