2007 prius starting issues

Interested to follow this thread. Hopefully it is a Minor issue. No codes came up?

 

Please run the test at Weird stuff happening? MPGs dropping? Test The Battery | PriusChat after the car has sat MANY hours or overnight. If it's already in the state when it won't start and you haven't started it successfully, may as well do it now. Please tell us the 3 values (not just 1). Don't go changing the battery first until you tell us the values...

If you have HIDs, you can avoid unnecessary cycles on the lights by toggling between off and parking light positions.

Weird stuff can start happening w/a low or bad 12 volt. Don't waste $ on having a dealer "test" the 12 volt (07 Prius Dead - Any Guesses? | PriusChat). If you're on you're original 12 volt, it's likely near or at end of life now. The cold temps probably have caused its voltage to drop further.

As for codes, you'll need an OBD2 code reader of some sort. However, from what I hear, some scan tools can't read all the codes that the Prius could throw or provide enough useful info.

You can jump it but, you have a dead/weak 12V battery (that is obvious). Just be certain you pay close attention to polarity when you jump it + to + and - to -.

 

I agree, your 12v is likely toast. If it were me, replacement at this point is a sure thing. You may want to call around to price the 12v replacement at dealers before driving around. The cost seems to vary widely between dealers. If you are willing to DIY you may just buy the battery and save the labor cost.

Options for this battery are limited though so you can't just go anywhere to find one. The OEM at Toyota dealers, or the Optima or Exide from parts stores. I haven't had to do it myself yet but I understand it's a very do-able do it yourself project. Doing some searches on this forum will get you all you need to know.

Everyone is talking about the 12v battery. It is located under the hatch, behind the RR seat. This one looks like a cross between a traditional car battery and a motorcycle battery. Where are you located, perhaps a PC member can assist you.

 

The Prius has two batteries, the 12 volt and the High Voltage or traction battery. The 12 volt looks like a regular car battery, though a little smaller. The HV (high voltage) battery is the main drive battery.

The 12v is the one that typically lasts 4-5 years, sometimes longer, sometimes not that long. But it is quite common to have to have to replace it in 4-5 years. It powers up the electronics for the car to start. When it gets weak all kinds of issues are reported. Starting issues of many descriptions are very often remedied by replacing this 12 volt battery. The electronics like a healthy 12 volt battery.

The HV traction battery is the one that people worry about going bad that know very little about the Prius. This battery going bad does happen but it is built to last the life of the car and rarely fails. It's not likely to have anything to do with your problem.

 

Your picture shows a dash that looks just like mine did a few days ago, except mine showed an empty gas gauge (tank was half full). I just got back from getting the 12v battery replaced. If you can get the car jumped and get the battery replaced right away, then fine. If you have to wait a few days for the new battery (as I did), then get it started (jump-start or battery charger) and drive it and drive it some more. Don't run any electrical stuff that you don't need and if you have smart key, then turn it off when parked (button under the steering column).

 

Guys, I am reading all those issue with the battery and startups. Mine is having the same problem. Its 2008 UK Model and gone around 61000 Miles. This morning I started the car. Had to push the button few times but it started ok. Then I washed the car (Outside) and move the car further up. After few hours I tried to start the car but No sign of power in the car at all. I tried jumpstart once but then disconnected as I thought It might cause another issue as It wasnt showing up any sign of power.
Can someone tell me why this could happened? And what could be the solution to it please.

 

Check the voltage of the battery with a digital volt meter. It sounds like the 12 volt battery is run down. You can check it under the hood at the jump post in the fuse box. You may find that the battery is discharged, and needs to be recharged and or replaced.

Tell us the volt reading you get from checking the 12v battery before charging or jumping. After you get the volt reading, if it is 12v or less you can slow charge up to 4 amps. Lower amps may be better for the battery. If you are still on the original battery it may well be weak. The Prius electronics do not like weak 12v batteries. Charging may buy you a little time, depending on the volt reading before charging measured under the hood at the jump point in the fuse box. All advice assumes you will have correct connections the first time. You may not get a second chance.
