I have a 2008 prius with 118,000. I haul my dogs around in the car and was wondering how to clean the hybrid battery fan?

I got in the back pulled out the tray and thought about unscrewing all the bolts for the hybrid battery but then was unsure if the fan was actually down there or in the side pieces.

Does anyone have a step by step to getting to this?

BTW thanks to everyone who posted the step by step for changing the spark plugs. I did mine yesterday.

Looking toward the front of the vehicle, right rear seat, to the right of it is a plastic strip with holes for venting, it's the intake, the fan's right there, haven't taken mine apart, I just stick a strong vacuum against it periodically, but with dogs in the churn, might be well worth while to delve deeper
When you installed your new plugs did you torque them?
Now clean your cabin air filter.

    Thanks nh7o, ursle, JimboPalmer!!
Great!! So, are there 2 one for each side (where do the little vents on the left go?) or just the one on the right? It looks like I would just have to take off the side panel.

Ursle: I torqued the plugs to 13ft/lb.

okay, so I got mine out.....not terribly dirty. A little pet hair around the ring where the vent hooks to it.

Didn't take long to do either.

your fan looks a lot cleaner than my fan did.. then again i have 4 years on your car.

my fan was dusted up... about 40 or so percent built up. in my opinion, that basically made my fan non operational (therefore i recommend to anyone that there is no such thing as cleaning the fan too often... hehe)

if you have a lot of hair blowing around in the car, i tend to wonder if hair is lodged inside the actual battery housing. not exactly a task most feel comfortable checking on... including myself. (i'm sure once i do it i'll get over that fear for the future.... in time)

it's been suggested on here that you can install some filter material behind the intake vent to catch these items before they get all caught up in the fan or the battery casing. (more like in between cells)
