Toyota finally called back late last night. They were doing diagnostics Saturday and went so far as to call the Toyota support line. Our Prius checked out fine on their tests so they had no clue what was wrong (I have no idea why they didn't change the water pump first). I wasn't the one who answered the phone so this is second hand info. The evening tech yesterday decided to start from the beginning and change the water pump and go from there. Seems very strange and a backwards way to work it (Saturday's crew that is), but then again I'm no mechanic.

In the end it was the water pump and there is no charge at all on the repair. This is why we (and I'm sure all of you reading this) drive Toyotas. 8 year old car with 130,000+ miles and the only repair we've ever made is the water pump (twice!) and that was recalled (also twice).

Good luck to all of you. I hope this blog helps someone else in the same situation.

Congratulations!! This seems like the best of all outcomes for you. And cudos to edthefox5, Britprius, and others that called it right from the beginning.

A good outcome for all concerned, it's a pity that dealerships do not seem to have the expertise that customers rightly expect from the so called experts on problems that are well known and documented.

I still think this situation with the coolant pump would not arise if Toyota modified the 12v supply for the pump or alternatively the supply for the power distribution ECU.

I agree with you Britprius. I think they learned a lot on this one and next time they'll know right away how to fix it.

I just want to clarify, the problem was covered by the Interim Recall (since we already fixed the original water pump recall item). They made it clear when we picked up the car today that they don't have parts yet for the fix for this Interim Recall and when the recall comes out we'll probably need to bring it back in to be updated with the new parts.
