A couple of weeks ago, it snowed about 8 inches overnight. My PIP was in my garage, and I didn't do any shoveling or plowing of the driveway. I had to get to work ASAP, so I just put my PIP in "B"--I figured that would give me enough slow, steady power, and it did. I made it out of the driveway no problem. However, I might add that I also have Winterforce STUDDED snow tires all around too. My little PIP is like a little tank in the snow and I love it! :)

Maybe the temp of the CAT makes a difference for emission proposes. And rate of change of various temp sensors.

Having made MANY, MANY recordings of different scenarios to determine how the PIP works, it sure would be a lot faster and more accurate to have a Toyota Engineer TELL us how the PIP works !!!

Are there ANY PIP owners from Japan on PriusChat?

Does Japan have a similar site?

It may be what we should be chasing. I checked the 3 cat temps in Torque and they weren't working.

I believe Ken from Japan used to be on this site but I haven't seen him in months.

That would be counter-productive though. An aspect of success for Prius has come from the devotion required to figure out how it works on our own. Removing that would result in an outcome with far less participation and less of an appreciation for the sophisticated software to take advantage of the complexities of real-world driving.

I am looking at a PiP. I have read that they come with the factory tires but there have been upgrade packages that offer one an all season tire. Are the people who say they do not have snow tires just the tires that came with the car talking about the factory installed tires or the upgrade all season tires? Is the PiP front wheel drive? We just had a big snow fall with high temps of 20 for about 2 weeks now. I saw so many Regular Prii off the road or stick in a dip in the road (the streets were loaded with snow and the plows were nowhere to be found). I had always thought the Prii would do well in the snow, but again I never know what kind of tires these people have and if there is a big difference between the factory installed tires or the upgrade. does the PiP 5dr HD come with the tire upgrade?

if you drive in a lot of snow, you should have snow tires and possibly studs.

Kooler, the only tire "upgrade" that comes on the Prius is the 17" tires available with the Prius Five and the persona series.
The pip has only one kind of tire, it's the same as the tires on Prius Two, Three, Four. It comes with all-season tires. That's all there is to it.

I am averaging 120 mpg on my first tank of gas here in Wisconsin with temps averaging in the upper 20s. This car is truly amazing. I went for a 6.5 mile trip this morning and the outside temp was 12 degrees ... The engine did not start at all ... Pure ev. Note. I do keep the car in the garage fully charged.

I still haven't identified all the criteria yet.

Battery temperature in combination with outside temperature complicates the observations. One pattern I have noticed is that the engine, when the heater is off and it's at least 10 degrees below freezing, will start up at 35 mph. In other words, if you keep the draw below that power threshold, it seems to make a difference. There's a speed tolerance when it's that cold out.

With so much winter remaining still, there are plenty more opportunities to observe. In the meantime, I too am enjoying the benefits of plugging in. Yesterday's fill up revealed a 74.9 MPG average for the tank.

Remote start is key to winter driving...along with the Xi3's, of course.

    Cold, frost on the windshield.

Make sure you leave car heater set for Defrost front and rear when you get leave it for the night.

Comfy and safe in the AM. And it shuts off after five minutes so uses very little fuel.

Hi! John, Mine is in a heated garage 45 degrees, so battery pretty warm. Now I don't have any way to measure temps or anything, but never had ICE start until this week when colder weather set in below about 10 degrees and when above about 35-40 mph. If I keep it on side streets at slower than 35-40 mph, ICE does not start. My two cents.

I think you are close John. Today it was 7 degrees out. I putzed around at 15-20 MPH for a mile or so then got on the open road and somewhere between 33-35 the ICE came on. Absolutely no power draw from heater or seats. Temp and speed matter. Frankly using ICE is okay, but I like to understand how everything works. It also seems like the battery gets used to the cold? My EV milage seems to be creeping up towards 10 again.

That sure is a boost. I would imagine MPG in the 40's with your previous 2010 Prius?

If you have Torque app, can you monitor and see if the Discharge controls gets lowered? Since I park in a heated garage, it doesn't get cold enough for me to notice. A fully charged PHV battery can discharge 40.5 kW.

    Discharge vs SOC.png

My guess is, if the temp gets lower, the allowed Discharge Control will lower the power drawn from the PHV battery hence limiting the speed.

I got mine just yesterday. It's too dang cold for first-time setup stuff at the moment though. Fortunately, I was able to film this morning's commute. I sure hope the footage looks good. 62 MPG for the trip, with 1.7 miles of EV left. That's quite remarkable considering the outside temperature was -6°F.
