I have a 2008 Prius with 100K miles. Recently, when replacing tires, I found the rear tires had uneven tread wear - I could feel the lumps by running my hand over the tire.

The tire salesman told me that this is due to a problem with the suspension (and recommended that I go to a friend of his). I'm a little skeptical - has anyone had this kind of uneven tire wear?

    Thanks,

    Steve

Were the lumps across the full width of the tire, just inside, just the outside, on both rear tires or just one?

Worn out shock absorbers can cause this sort of problem but my first port of call would be a full four wheel alignment check. You do not say if your wheels have been rotated in the past this can make a difference.

One other point what new tyres did you have fitted as tyre choice on the Prius is critical to fuel economy.

    bisco,

The tires had about 60K miles on them. They are Michelin energy savers

    Thanks,

    Steve

that's quite a few miles, i suppose suspension is the culprit. you should have things looked over and keep a close eye on the new tires. if you go to his friend, you should probably get a second opinion. did you rotate front to back every 5,ooo? how are the fronts?
