I have a 2007 Prius and the 12 V battery died, I purchased a new battery and have disconnected the ground wire, removed the bolts, etc but I cannot release the red and black covering over the postivie terminal and the top of the battery, what's the trick?

Isn't that a bitch to get apart..... When I did exactly what you are doing, I ended up using several small screw drivers and carefully pried the tabs apart. The extra screwdrivers acted as wedges and at one point, it just popped apart! It goes back together, a little easier, just take your time and make sure all tabs etc are good and snap!

Been there, dun that! Good Luck!

A little dielectric grease on the connection before insertion isn't a bad thing

It is not necessary to remove the red plastic cover. Just bend the cover up sufficiently for access to the terminal nut.

Danny thank you very much for your e-Mail. I was able to finally replace the battery after 3 weeks of (*^%$#@ with it because I could release the red positive cover. Since we cannot be the only Prius owners experiencing this problem I have edit and included your information to a post I'm adding to this thread.

Beneath the red positive terminal covering is 12 mm nut that must be removed prior to separating the black housing for the positive terminal from the battery. Use three small screwdrivers on the two side tabs and top tab to remove the red covering from the black positive terminal housing. This can be a very difficult task unless someone like Danny at Prius Chat sends you an e-Mail informing you that you are not crazy , in can be a real &^%$#@&^.

    Thank you -Danny.

The 2 youtube videos I watched on Prius battery replacement did not mention this difficult task. The makers of the videos were well-intentioned but I felt were somewhat misleading. Removing the red positive terminal cover was by-far the most difficult task in the process of replacing the axillary battery.

If you purchased the replacement Optima Yellow Top battery don't worry about the exhaust hose.

    Thank you -Danny.
