    well my 2 cents

the more the merrier. i dont think that the desire to start up another Prius information site should be considered an attack on an existing site in any way what so ever, and i would be very surprised if John took it as such.

to me the very goal of an informational site like John's is to build snergy for a new and exciting concept. I would think that others wanting to create their own site would be part of John's overall vision.

Just as this site helps to spread the word about the Prius, your site would help get the word out. Teh burden of information shouldnt be placed in one basket anyway. multiple sources helps insure the quality and impartiality of the facts presented at all the websites as a whole.

Good point...and if the Wiki features links to other Prius websites, which is very well should, then people will be free to see all the other sources of information that they'd like.

Quick note: I've developed a number of internal Wikis for my company -- they're very good for organizing data (and getting it up in a hurry), and for sharing info amongst a number of people.

    However, two things:
    • It still benefits from a "moderator/maintainer/editor" -- someone to put a consistent stamp on the information over time, and to decide what information needs to be emphasized or deleted.
Otherwise, you just get a "pile of data" -- current, but unorganized and often even contradictory.
    • We've found Wikis to be much less effective in an external -- internet -- situation. Basic analogy: anyone can come by and spray grafitti on your billboard. Can... and will.

      • Personally, I would find a Wiki very useful in the "Beta" version of the knowledge base -- while it was under construction (and if the Wiki had good revision control built in. I've used UseModWiki almost exclusively, because it's easy to set up for Intranets, and has good revision control. But that would be for the primary knowledge base developer, and the "beta test group".

After it's in good form, the data can then be "published" in a non-Wiki format in the knowledgebase, for general readership. Further changes can be made to the Wiki, and the main knowledgebase refreshed.

Thanks for the notes! I've considered the 'openness' issue. For the moment, I'm mostly willing to risk it, altho' I am planning to at least require people to log in to edit things.

I'm planning on using MediaWiki (which is what's currently used for Wikipedia).

Well, as I said earlier, I know I'd be willing to moderate stuff, but I personally don't think that possibly setting up a system where moderators had to review the Wiki entries before they were put online would be much of a hassle. In all seriousness, is it really that essential to get information online that instant?

I think the Wiki idea is great. I have set up a Wiki for our company to help manage our design and development infomation. I use PMWiki, see http://www.pmwiki.org/ (also includes a good introduction to the concept of a Wiki).

I echo another response I saw, which is I wonder how hard it would be to manage on a Word Wide Web basis. Althought somewhat contrary to the concept of a Wiki, I think it would be much easier to manage if contributers were limited to "trusted" PriusChat memebers, maybe level Prius Poster and above.

Oops, never mind.... I just saw this is a really dead thread!!

I got pulled in by the random poll that came up.

Just to give the information. There's already a wiki for Prius but only in French. It uses pmwiki. Of course, it's possible to add easily an english version but the question is: is there people that are ready to fill the wiki?

Hello everyone. First time posting here. New prius owner as of 6 days ago!

I've been digging through the massive amount of info in this forum and almost immediately starting feeling that this place is in need of a well structured wiki. What is the status of this idea for a Prius Wiki? This is the only thread I found about wikis. Any updates?

There's lots in this forum, but much of it is horribly scattered and disorganized...that's just the nature of the beast.

For example, I keep seeing people metioning and talking about this "Cam View" thing, and in order to find out what this thing is and what it does, I have to leave the forum and google it. What is contained in the forum are many comments about the Cam View, about it's merits, problems, etc., but as a nooby, I just want to know what the fricking thing is first. Then I want to know how much it costs, and then would want to hear about people's opinions about installing it in a prius.

There are numerous examples like that for me.

There are plenty of easy to use wiki solutions on the market today, many of them free. It sure would make things easier for many people if the knowledge of the people in this great forum was organized in an easily accessible format.

I put in a strong vote for a Prius Wiki!

    Best to you all.

I made the prius wiki one year ago and it still growing (slowly because a few people know how to edit it and take time to fill it) but the biggest issue is that the wiki is only in french. You can read it here : http://prius.ploki.info

Of course I can add a new language since pmwiki can handle it but I cannot manage the English content so if you think it could be cool to have the same site, no problem, just ask me.

I think that if more people here knew about your site, acemtp, we would be willing to help with it and link to it for ours and others' benefits.

What's involved in setting up an English version?

I'm new to this site and a new owner as well. I have been digging for info re: Prius for 3 weeks now and would love to see a wiki dedicated to Prius with all of the information centrally located and organized. Acempt your site looks nice, but I can't read French and well, that's a drawback for me. lol

Has anyone else acted on this since the original postings?
