Always wanted to ensure your feedback for future product decisions was heard? Now’s your chance…Prius Team is starting this thread to hear specifically about what telematics features you want to see on future Plug-in models. I know it’s so tempting to drop in all of the other subjects, but please limit your feedback in this thread to just telematics based info.

Some things to consider: from your suggestions, are these features you think we should make standard (given this is not a pure EV where telematics are more of a necessity than a perk)? Keep in mind that not everyone will want these features but they would in some way be paying for them if we make them standard, so that’s always the tradeoff. Or, are these features you think only the more premium buyer would want to use that we should reserve for the Plug-in Advanced model?

Thanks in advance for helping to shape the future of PiP.

(We appreciate your feedback about features you would like to see in vehicles, but please keep in mind that we cannot accept ideas or proposals for underlying technologies, and we can’t promise to keep your feedback confidential.)

I assume by the general term telematics you mean data and info that you can collect in the car and send to your phone?
To start I would want the car to automatically collect per trip info...date/time, odo start, odo end, air temp, EV miles, kwh consumed, HV miles, gas consumed and be able to dump this, trip-by-trip into a spreadsheet or other app. From there you could do any number of things such as graph, show trends over seasons, etc. A trip is each start-power off of the car as well as defines by the trip odometers.

For starters, I want them to update the Entune system, including the app not only for future plugins but also the current plugins. I really hope that there will be improvements/updates to this system. It's nice to look at future improvemets but dont leave us current owners hanging.

Things that should be added to the app:
You show the daily mpg which is nice but it's worthless without showing daily mileage with it.
Being able to turn off and schedule charge from the app

    - I want everything 3PriusMike wants !!!
    - For info displayed on the HSI and EV screens, Press a button and the info is captured and stored for retrieval.
    - Display the kWh of the last charge and store it. Maybe even see the last 30 days of charges and store it for retrieval.
    - Instead of having to buy a ScanGauge or Torque Software, incorporate it and store data for retrieval.
    - add individual Tire Pressures, even for the Base.
    - Have a single button to open Maps screen. You now have to press Apps, confirm, Maps
    - When the ICE is on for ANY reason, have the Energy Monitor display a RED Engine. Currently, if stationary with the ICE on, there is no RED, but you can tell the ICE is on.

I would like to have the phone app to be an alternative data entry point.

As an example use-case, almost everyday, I want the in-built navigation to navigate me to the sone address on my phone, and if the entunes' iPhone/Android would let me, I would like to send it over to the navigation system by copying and pasting it from the phone app instead of typing it on the navigation system's touch screen.

Further, I would like entunes' API to be made available to the developers for them to build better apps around it. I am an iOS developer myself, and there are so many things I could have worked if I had access to the APIs to communicate with the system.

I think the telematics (assuming we're talking about the phone app and access to data) should be an option for the Base, but be included in the Advanced model.

It should be included in the Advanced because the Volt includes it. It should at least be an option in the Base because the Leaf also includes it, but in the interest of keeping the Base price down, at least make it available.

If there was any single option that would've swayed me into buying an Advanced, it was the phone access.

I also agree that the range of data should be expanded. If not natively, then like what vbgoz said, make it available via an API so those who want to develop applications are able to access the relevant data somehow.

Maybe looking at what is available in the Volt is a good start.

Just think of the "damage" usbseawolf2000 could do if all that data was available in his Base PiP :D

    Here you go :)

Telematics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Telematics typically is any integrated use of telecommunications and informatics, also known as ICT (Information and Communications Technology). Hence the application of telematics is with any of the following:

    • The technology of sending, receiving and storing information via telecommunication devices in conjunction with affecting control on remote objects.
    • The integrated use of telecommunications and informatics, for application in vehicles and with control of vehicles on the move.
    • Telematics includes but is not limited to Global Positioning System technology integrated with computers and mobile communications technology in automotive navigation systems.
    • Most narrowly, the term has evolved to refer to the use of such systems within road vehicles, in which case the term vehicle telematics may be used.

Bisco, you could have checked for the definition. It's the combination of Data Communication and Phone.

Every day here another Prius owner is asking about "codes" that are emitted by the vehicle diagnostics. Can we finally get rid of such obscure and difficult to understand data?

1: All diagnostic codes should be available in English and transmitted via Bluetooth or WiFi to a smartphone app, and readable on the vehicle display.
2: Why is the tire pressure only either OK or too low? "Numbers" were invented many years ago, and if the pressure of each tire were available, we could see if, for example, there was a slow leak or other problem, and which tire it afflicted. Again, this data should be visible on the vehicle display and transmitted via Bluetooth or WiFi to a smartphone app.
3: Information on acceleration, braking, and other driver behavior, including the data that the "black box" collects would be nice to have.

In fact, it would be nice to have all the information that is now either obfuscated or obscure. Although most drivers would have little use for all of it, many people are interested in at least some aspect of their vehicle's operation. Why keep it hidden behind "codes" and idiot lights?

I see no reason to limit the availability of data to only "advanced" models. You already have the data, you already have Bluetooth, you already have a display, so the only cost would be to develop the software. Once developed, it will add nothing to the cost of either the standard or advanced models. BTW, I'm not sure that I'm being entirely responsive to your question here since you don't exactly define "telematics." And, I might add, that it's quite the pleasure to be asked questions like this before development, rather than after. I suspect Entune would be a far better system if you listened to actual customers rather than to regulators and in-house engineers.

i suppose, but for now, there's not much charging in my area so i guess it would depend on what info i could get.

    It's a Brainstorming Session.

Nothing is Wrong to suggest, and it may even make sense after we think about it.

To be useful, for the community, it needs to be standard on all models. We'd like everyone to be able to collect and share their data. This helps people drive better. It gives us something to talk about. And it gives data back to Toyota so they can see the results of how their cars are used.
Maybe even setup an official Toyota web site that collects and anonymizes the data in aggregate. And provide drawings for free service coupons or accessories in order to get people to share their data. Of course, Toyota could already be collecting such data when you have your car serviced and how would we know?

Why is receiving data via telematics and associated smart phone the base requirement? Why not write all the data suggested at end of each trip to my flash drive in USB port? It could build a spreadsheet for me trip-by-trip with a wealth of data at minimal cost/complexity. kwh & gas consumed make sense as well as calculated columns with both MPG and MPGe for each trip for convenience. If the ICE ran, perhaps code for reason why! How about trip time in seconds and seconds with ICE on if that data is not expensive to collect. Starting and ending battery SOC. Setup option could enable/disable attempted writing of this data.

I'm in the group that only has a dumb phone that I never use. Carry it with me for emergencies. I don't email, text, get voice mail, etc. Don't want it either. But I sure would like to be able to access the information from something called a Computer at home. I realize I am very old-fashioned and don't drive while sending emails or talk on smarty phones or stuff, but really would like to be able to check out the data in the comfort of my home....... Is that possible?

It's a very similar situation to what "multimedia" was back in the 90's. Remember that?

After googling, we know Toyota is working with Microsoft on it using Windows Azure platform and the setup will be cloud based.

GPS - We can use it to optimize route by tapping/recognizing previous trips as well as the terrain data. This will be terrain and route awared feature. Make it a standard feature if the realworld efficiency gain is big enough. Don't make it a standard if there is no gain in EPA or other popular tests (consumer report, etc).

Smart Plugin - This will require a smart phone with data plan so it should be optional or only in the Advanced model. The car will know when my aram is set. Use it to finish charging when I am ready to leave.

Change of seasons will be recognized and optimized accordingly. Aware of the weather (current and forecast) and auto turn on the heated seat or AC upon starting up the car. This would be configurable. On a humid day, the car can prevent fogging up inside.

Share data easily on Priuschat. Community discussion for understanding, analyzing and optimizing efficiency by planning, changing route or behavior. That can only be possible in a community like Priuschat.

Open API - Allow 3rd party write apps and access the CAN bus for OBDII data. This will keep the community busy and build enthusiasm.
