oh yeah... we found out what happened... lol

So the engine was rebuilt after an accident before i got it...
but instead of replacing the motor mounts properly... they welded it instead of bolting it in...

So what happened was the welds broke and caused a catastophic failure...
the engine jumped forward, ripping my fancy stainless steel exhaust system in half, and damaged the drive shaft and axel...

so its in the shop... $7000 and they will replace all, and I should get it back mid week...

There goes my gas savings for the next 2 years... :( hahaha

Ouch! Dumping $7k in a 2001 Prius is one heck of a gamble. Not sure if I would have gone that route unless it already had a new battery and some crazy low mileage. Even then....damn. My 2002 with 100k miles and a new battery was only $4400.

    Good luck.

I got it from a private seller... a guy on Vancouver Island... was unhappy because the guy he bought it off didnt tell him the car was in an accident... so he sold it cheap :)

The car is originally from the US... was in an accident, and was totally rebuilt...

Pictures.... hell I got videos of it on youtube and Prius Chat :)

Part of me said, I could just buy another one for that amount of money...
I usually scrap one or two cars a year...
but I just couldent scrap this car...
other than this, it drives really nice, alot better than the crap i usually drive...
and it saves me almost $1000 a month in gas!

Is a toyota dealer fixing it or an independent shop? New or used parts? $7k seems like a lot.

Those are USA prices. The original poster is Canadian.

Now if he could check used NHW20 prices in Canada . . . and part out the NHW11. It is a small market but BC is close enough to the USA border, he might be able to 'do a deal' . . . not that Yankee buisness practices would appeal to our Northern cousins.

I took it to my local Toyota dealer and am putting all new parts in.... Not the cheapest route... but I wanted to take it to the dealer so I could get the cars history, and try and determine wether the car was worth fixing.... I could save almost $2000 if I went aftermarket exhaust installed at a muffler place.... but I just want it all done quick, and right...

Hopefully your dealer is honest and competent. If you feel good about your dealer and the expenditure go for it.

A lot of US dealers mis-diagnose Prius (especially Gen1's), and end up selling customers stuff they don't need....I see it all the time.

"Rebuilt engine" can mean a lot of things depending on who did the work ... this one wasn't rebuilt by the same geniuses who installed it, was it?

Are the original engine mount locations still there and usable?

There's another recent thread here where we looked up the price of the Toyota OEM exhaust system parts. The parts pricing didn't seem too bad for what you get. If you're being quoted a price so high that you could save $2k by going aftermarket, there must be somebody's boat payment rolled into that quote. You might look into the option of just buying the OEM parts online and installing them (or having your local muffler shop install them).

I checked that when I posted. The conversion was about $6950 US.

    7000 Yen, that's another story.
