I am with AT&T, and every since I accepted the upgrade to ICS 4.1.1 on my Galaxy S3, my bluetooth no longer works well in my PIP. It frequently cannot connect the phone, or drops the bluetooth connection. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm pretty sure it's an Android problem and not PIP fault but I haven't been able to get help anywhere else.

have you tried to delete your bluetooth connection in your PIP and re-installing bluetooth again?

Once I upgraded my unlocked (no contract) Galaxy SII GT-I9100 from ICS to Samsung's official JB release, my Bluetooth actually started working more reliably and more quickly. The phone sometimes would take its sweeeeet time to connect to a call under ICS, and once in a while it would just not connect.

With JB, every BT-PiP function happens much faster, and it happens always - no drops and every connection completes (two weeks' time so far living with JB).

I have the Sprint (Ting) version of the S3 on 4.1.1 (haven't received the 4.1.2 update yet) and it connects every time that I've noticed, but I only connect the S3 in bluetooth call audio mode only since I use my tablet on android 4.0.4 for bluetooth media audio.

I've read that android Jelly Bean 4.1 has issues with bluetooth media which Google apparently fixed in android 4.2 supposedly.

Hmm. I have deleted my bluetooth info in the phone, and car. Then reconnected but still have the same problem. I have both the media and audio on. BTW, I have the premium NAV option. I wonder if that makes a difference.

Could be. Probably a different team of devs did the Bluetooth for the new update and now it works better on one unit and worse on another based on the way they changed or implemented new features.
