I have a 2006 prius with about 75k mies on it. it was sitting for a few months (due to loss of job exp tags no insurance) finally got financial issues squared away and when i was ready to use my prius it would not start. Jump start got it going and it drove great. occasionally after having the car parked it would give me problems starting. sometimes screen would read "There is a problem with the transmission "p" lock mechanism. Park your car on a flat surface, and fully parking break" after following steps and turning car on and off a few times it would allow me to drive. Last night i got home and parked my car, turned it off an immediately noticed that as soon as i powered off the car i lost all power. i tried starting car right away and no power at all. door locks, all lights, breaklights, everything off. this morning i tried jump starting car and nothing so i went to toyota and had the 12v battery replaced. Unfortunately still no power however power button illuminated green when pushed but nothing else, still no power nothing but the green light. i pushed the power button once more and light illuminated orange and when i applied the break i could hear clickin noises under the hood but still no power at all... nothing. i checked all fuses and everything checked out ok. i also checked the 120amp fuse and it seems to be just fine as well. please help!

Since the 12V battery was replaced at a Toyota dealer service dept, did the car start at that time? If it did not start, what was the tech's diagnosis?

If the car did start, and you had a problem after you brought the car home, then my guess is that the brake light switch is having a problem. Press HARD on the brake pedal as you depress the POWER switch.

Have your BF make sure that the positive and negative battery cables are tight at the battery. Make sure the negative cable is tight where it connects to the body. If the cable connections are good, turn on the headlights to make sure they are bright, which gives you a qualitative indicator of the battery condition.

If all those tests do not reveal a problem then I think you will need to secure professional help.

With a dc voltmeter read the voltage across the 12 volt battery jump leads in that fuse box you just replaced the big white fuse. The hot side is right above that fuse under a red plastic flip up cover.
We are checking the dc voltage getting to that fuse box.

What caused the fusible link assembly to blow? Did someone reverse jump battery polarity?

If yes, then the inverter may have been damaged. You'll need to have the diagnostic trouble codes read to find out what is wrong.

Just now found out my car was indeed reversed jumped. -__-

So inverter needs to be replaced? Is it expensive? Is it something we can do or must it be done at the dealer?

You need the diagnostic codes read to determine what damage has been done. Reversed jump connection is possibly very bad. The codes will tell.

That's terrible. I'm hoping this is the last time I hear of this happening but, I'm betting it won't be.

The inverter probably has failed but you will need to obtain the DTC to be sure. P0A08 will indicate the DC/DC converter within the inverter has failed.

The dealer will charge you a healthy four-digit price to replace the inverter. The inverter is sitting in the engine compartment and has a shiny aluminum cover, next to the main relay/fuse box.

Yes, it is possible to replace it yourself with a used part from a salvage yard, if you have reasonable technical skills. Obtain repair manual info at techinfo.toyota.com

Man we have seen this so many times. All from a dead 12 volt battery. Do all you can do to not let that little battery go dead.

BE Very careful attaching the jump leads. If the person is not a car guy don't let them do it. If its a AAA guy and cannot go right to the correct black plastic fuse box and flip open the red plastic cap exposing the plus jump terminal with authority do not let him jump the car. If he's poking around in there or asking questions or wants to see the manual and not sure where the jump terminal is he's a rookie and learning on your car. Do not let him jump your car. Shoo him away.

And make sure the donor car's engine is off.

Btw, there is usually a bunch of Gen II Inverters on eBay. here's one:

Why do we trust people to change the 12v in our Prius. Very expensive learning lesson! H:cry:

Yeah, it looks like $200-400 for the used part. That's not too bad. It doesn't look too complicated to replace either, though there are obviously precautions that must be observed.

Just traded a 2009 Prius for the same reason. The rear battery either doesn't hold a charge or is dead due to cold weather. Technision said to be sure the right wheel well is clear of ice. In Canada? Buyer beware. I talked Prius for years and owned 2 but reliability is important to me. Fill up and no power? Stop anywhere, no power?
    No thank-you.
