Hybrid Battery Dead - CARB Warranty Questions

    My check engine light came on, I took the car to my usual mechanic, and he said the codes returned indicated that two cells in the batter were bad. (I just called to get the codes, but he's out of the office for about 30 minutes on a test drive...)

    On the way home yesterday, I noticed a sort of high pitch whine, and that the battery was not recharging when I was going downhill (for example). As I drove home, the battery indicator just got lower and lower, until it was just one last line (or brick) at the bottom. I have no desire to see what happens if I try to drive it again.

    The car has 129,000 miles, but I live in California. I've seen several posts here about the warranty being 150k, since I'm in CA. I am unable to find my Warranty book that came with the car.

    Am I going to have to prove to the dealer that I am under warranty, or is it your experience that it goes pretty smoothly? (I'm also waiting for a call back from the dealer to verify the warranty service...)

    The main code is P0A80 (HV battery replace, I believe), with subcodes 3022 and 3024, which I believe indicates the two cells that failed...

    Is there any way to download the warranty information booklet? I can't find it anywhere on the Toyota website, nor anywhere else, for that matter...

    You need to check CARB effective date to see whether you are covered.

    You mean when CARB took affect in California? Not sure what you mean. Sorry...

    In other CARB states, you have to check when each adopted CARB rules. CA was the first and all Gen2 Prii were covered. In CT the CARB coverage started in 2007 (my 2004 Prius HV battery was only covered for 8 years or 100k miles)

    When the dealer reads the codes indicating a failed traction battery Toyota will replace it without a hassle.
