What motors will be compatible with a 2005 prius?

    Im trying to help my mother find a new engine for her prius.

    She took the prius out of town and she had a light come on she doesn't remember if it was oil light or check engine light... But she pulled in to les schwab and they were just going to do an oil change to see if that would solve the problem. Long story short they found that there was less than 1 quart of oil in the car when they drained it. She got it back to the Toyota dealership here and the engine needs to be replaced.

    Toyota says that they believe jiffy lube(last place she got her oil changed) must not have put enough oil in when they changed it. No oil leaks and nothing burning out the tail pipe.... So I guess it is possible that they forgot to put oil back in the car. She filed a claim with the corporate jiffy lube office but who knows if that will help.

    For now I am trying to help her get her prius running again at a reasonable price because I don't really count on jiffy lube coming through.

    Toyota dealership wanted 1200 for a used motor along with 2600 in labor and another 400 for gaskets. This puts their rough estimate around $4200. I called bullshit and am in the process of helping her find a reasonably priced mechanic and am looking at motors from local junkyards.

    Well I found a mechanic who will charge $1700(water pump, gaskets etc... he would just charge price of the parts) in labor and he has a line on an engine for $1000 or I can find my own.

    Here is where I need help. I need a list of what motors from different cars if any will be compatible with her prius. I am getting conficting reports from the Toyota service desk guy and the junk yard people. The Toyota guy is saying that it not only has to be a prius motor but that it need to be a 2005 or possibly a 2006 and nothing else. The junkyard guys have several motors fro other cars like a yaris, or a scion that are all the 1.5L motor and they believe that these will be compatible. These salvage yards have much better prices on their motors but they are from various types of cars.

    So who is right here? Are these other motors compatible? Is it just something simple like motor mounts which I can swap from the old motor that is making the Toyota guy say that it has to be a prius motor? Or does it have to be a motor from a hyrid prius in 2005?

    Really confused here and I appreciate any help you guys can provide, just trying to get my mother back on the road and save her a few bucks.

    Any gen 2 should be compatible. 2005-2009. Lower mileage the better. It might be best to pull and swap the whole thing.

    It has to be a Prius engine but as long as it is out of a gen2 Prius 2004/2009 it does not matter. Although the Prius engine is based on a Yaris they are very different internally. The Yaris is an Otto cycle engine the Prius is an Atkinson cycle engine that is about 10% more efficient on fuel.

    Yep it should be a Prius engine, anything from 2004 to 2009. If I were you I'd definitely try to get one with a dipstick this time. o_O

    Only the 2nd gen Prius engine (1NZ-FXE) (the X denotes that it is a hybrid engine) will work. The 1SZ-FE Yaris engine may be similar but it is not the same and not useable as a Prius engine. Hybrid engines are built to handle the engine shutting off while in motion or at a stop and running once you apply the accelerator.

    Not sure where you live but I see wrecked low mileage Prius' being parted out all over Southern California. Engines are well under 500 bucks. For a grand I'd expect the trans and inverter to be included.

    My family has lost two cars to Jiffy Lube. One had its tranny fluid drained, and the engine topped off with 5 add'l quarts of oil (for a total of 10 quarts in a 5 quart engine). Rings blew, engine lost compression, no recompense from Jiffy Lube.

    The other never had the oil cap replaced, so the engine oil sprayed out the valve cover and the engine seized. Jiffy Lube offered an engine steam clean, that's it.

    Never use Jiffy Lube or any other "quick oil change" station. They're staffed by monkeys and managed by folks who only care about taking your money.

    The only person I trust to work on my vehicles is ME.

    If I have to have work performed by anyone else I inspect every nut, bolt and washer before accepting the vehicle.
    I could write a book on things I've found wrong with hourly wage work.
