You might need to file Form 6251

It is required to file form 6251for this $2500 credit. I looked through the instruction of form 6251:
    Who Must File
Attach Form 6251 to your return if any ofthe following statements is true.
    3. You claim the qualified electric vehicle credit, the personal use part of the alternative fuel vehicle refueling property credit, or the credit for prior year minimum tax.

According to a poster in the Leaf forum (My Nissan Leaf Forum • View topic - Electric drive vehicle credit 8936 decreased/rejected by IRS), this is not referring to the 8936 plug-in credit:

Will filing form 6251 impact my tax status other than allowing me to get the additional $2500 for the PIP?

Maybe. You have to fill it out to find out.

    Hmmm...
Well I already filed- that's how I know they cut my refund by $2500.
Wonder if I'll have to file an amended return? I'm going to call the IRS Monday morning.

I have to wait to see the paper notice . Then decide the next step. I am reading the AMT materials. AMT is quite complicated to me.

I also just got my federal tax rebate this past week and it was missing my $2500 tax credit. Yesterday, I got a letter from the IRS stating that "within 6 weeks, we'll either contact you for an explanation or release your refund." I guess all I can do is wait now. =(

I'm on the phone w/the IRS right now- on hold.
The agent can't understand why the credit was not issued.
    I'm back on hold again...

I'm off the phone- the IRS phone agent couldn't help- he doesn't know why the credit wasn't issued. He originally thought to have me submit the older form 8834 (for vehicles purchased before 2012) but then seeing the model year and date of purchase (10/2012) of my PIP he agreed that form 8936 was the correct form. He then asked about the battery capacity, weight of vehicle, type; plug in electric, etc... but in the end - still couldn't understand the problem.

He said I'll have to wait the 2-3 weeks for a snail mail letter from the IRS to arrive explaining what I have to do in order to get the credit. He suspects the letter may ask me to send in a copy of the bill of sale for the PIP along w/a copy of form 8936 that I have already submitted. I would then get a separate check for $2500 after 4-6 weeks. So, we're looking at possibly 9 weeks to resolve this situation  maybe.....
