Soon be looking to install a 35w hid kit in my 2010 model prius, obviously will be wanting to swap the sidelights to something with a better colour match to the 5 or 6 k hid bulbs I go for, the hid kit that I will be buying will be the alltronix canbus pro available here in the UK, going to use a relay cable with the hid kit, bit confused about the cree sidelights I was planning to fit regards the canbus system, do I have to use canbus sidelights or will any aftermarket cree sidelights be okay and not cause any problems ? Also any advice what size the opening for the sidelights is ? I notice that the cree 3watt bulbs are 12mm in width and the 5 / 7 watt ? Bulbs which I belive are around 15mm in width okay ?

Lastly, here in the UK it would seem that prius specific bulbs ie. the ones with the ground rod facing down are impossible to buy, so is it a case off having to mod them ?

Which sidelights are you referring to, the side markers (headlights) or in the lower bumper (turn signals)?
Do you have any links to the Cree lights you are looking to install?

I don't believe that the side marker lights (headlights) or turn signals are recognized by the CANBUS.

I'm able to squeeze this 3w Cree LED in the side marker (headlight). I did not install this because the light viewing angle was not 360 degrees. I tried to put this in the licenses plate housings but this was too long by 1-2mm. There might be some material which you could remove from the bulb to make it fit, but I haven't tried.
    168/194/921/T10 3 Watt Cree LED

I currently have the 2.5w high power LED in the side marker (headlight). These are as bright, if not slightly brighter, than the 168 bulb. I personally wouldn't want anything brighter than this.
    168/194/921/T10 High Power LED bulbs

4-5k HIDs would closely match the light output in the above two LED lights. They are exact, if not very close, to the same light color as the OE LED headlights.

Excellent reply !! yes sorry for the confusion over here in the uk we call side marker lights just " side lights " !! I know what you mean regards the cree bulbs have them fitted to a another car - Hyundai coupe and although they are very bright for there size they are very directional and like you say not 360 degrees, in saying that I still like them and at just 10 GBP for two delivered from a uk ebay seller were a good buy and give a very bright white light when compared to some off the other multi led type ones I have fitted to cars before.

as I say the ones I have on the other car are the 3w / 12mm in width ones and they fit okay but was just wondered if they would fit in the prius- will try them and see !!
interesting regards the sidelights ( side markers ) and turn signals not being recognised by the canbus - anyone else confirm this ??

The drivers side is pretty easy. Just reach your hand down behind the light, find the fitting/wiring, and twist to release it.

The passengers side is a bit tricky because of the washer fluid bottle and hoses in the way.

Unbolt the washer bottle mount, coolant tank and carefully shove them out of the way :)
