How many miles of EV should I get?

    During January and February my EV ranged varied from 8.6 to 8.8 miles. I averaged ~124 mpg
    In March my EV ranged increased to ~9.2. I averaged ~124 mpg.
    This past weekend I managed to eek out 14.6 EV miles my estimated EV before departure was 9.1 miles.

    I thought that the HV mode tended to keep the SOC at whatever level it was at when switched from EV to HV. The only exception is when the SOC is at the bottom of the normal HV level the car brings it back up to the normal HV level of about 6 bars. (Bars not the continuous display of a well charged PIP battery.)

    That's why you have to use "stacking" to recharge the larger PIP battery when on a long trip with some good hills for regeneration. Stacking means use EV mode during downhill to charge the battery, switch to HV on the flat or uphill and the car will keep the SOC at approximately the new level.

    Or you can keep it in HV mode and let the charge build then hit EV mode for a moment to "set" the new stacked level. Then switch back to HV mode. This assumes going down hill or coming to a less than efficient stop. :)

    Will the amount of charge added going down a long hill with significant regeneration be the same in the two modes?
    What do you mean by "less than efficient stop"?

    From what I can tell, yes. I will try EV mode on my long downhill tomorrow but I rarely just let regen work. I tend to glide or warp stealth on most downhill sections.

    I was referring to a situation where you have to brake harder than you normally would in a hypermiling situation. This usually occurs when traffic is behind you and you cannot glide to a stop as efficiently as you would like or you simply misgauge how fast you were going. :)

    Woohooo!! Saw 15 miles of AER on the display when leaving today. It's been increasing by a tenth or two each morning, since taking delivery last Saturday.

    I previously reported 14.5 for EV. We went on an overnight 320 mile trip some country roads going out almost all highway coming home, no power line recharge on the trip. This morning the EV read 14.8. I mostly use EV where it is efficient, on the flat under 40 mph and downhill for charging. For uphill and faster speeds I use HV.

    EV range dipped down as low as 9.4 miles but back up to 10.9 this morning. Managed to do 14 EV miles today. Temp up to 8 degree Celsius must help a bit.

    Have a 47 mile commute to work and with getting tips from here and getting to know how to drive it have managed 101 and 105mpg the last two mornings. Love this car :).

    I got my 2012 Plug In Prius last January. After a full charge, the display would show 11.8 electric miles.
    Recently I saw this number drop to 9.2 electric miles after a full charge. I have driven 3250 miles.
    Today, the system was telling me that after a full charge, the electric range was only 8.7 electric miles.
    I know the electric range may vary depending on may different factors, and the capacity of the battery will decrease over time (although not 2.5 electric miles in 3 months ) but Im concern about this since the readings the system shows are taken immediately after charging, right before even drive it.
    Any advise?

    Why is temperature a factor in EV miles? Is the battery at a lower temperature? Does that give it a lower capacity?

    This is a nice easy to read article on batteries. Basically, the chemical reaction inside a battery work best at temperature. This is not unlike a conventional gas engine which operates best once it is warmed up. Couple all this with rain, snow, and shorter trips due to worse weather compared to summer and we have lower overall fuel economy. More AC use in summer doesn't offset heater and defroster use in winter. Again, all of this affects gas engines as well as batteries. My assumption is that few people track their gasoline usage and just fill it up. On a Hybrid or EV, it's right there in your face all the time.
