WATER PUMP AND TIMING COVER LEAKS

    Hi All!

    I just joined this great forum and having a tough time finding a solution for Water Pump and Timing Cover Leaks.

    2007 Prius Pkg 6
    111k miles
    Bought the car used from a dealer (non toyota) and doubt that the 90k service was done

    Issues found by dealer (when I took it in for the steering shaft recall):

    $470 Replace water pump (Found coolant leak) (for the gas engine)
    $1,240 Reseal timming cover (Found engine oil seep)

    2 weeks ago I filled my coolant as I saw it was a tiny bit low, but since then I have not seen the coolant levels drop. The Dealer is quoting me an absurd amount of money and I for one cannot afford that. I looked up the parts online and they total to less than $80, if that. Can anyone help guide me in the right direction? perhaps a DIY? I have posted 3 photos they took of my car under the hood as well.

    Don't remember the price of the pump but from what I see I would replace it. I would like to see the labor fee they quoted you because it isn't hard. As for the timing cover leak, I would clean off the area with brake cleaner and recheck at your next oil change and see how bad it is then. There may be enough room to reseal the cover in chassis but I would have to look at one to be sure. Given the price they quoted they are pulling the engine/transaxle to reseal the cover.

    I had the timing chain cover resealed under warranty. The leak was extremely slow in my case: no oil on the garage floor, just a droplet hanging at the bottom of the engine, and if wiped off it took many weeks for the next droplet to form. So in my case if there was no warranty then I won't bother pay for the repair. IIRC there is no huge pressure across the timing chain cover seal so a tiny leak won't become a big leak overnight.

    Similarly there was a recent post by a member who had a water pump leak but only minimal fluid loss so it was left unfixed and hasn't had a problem. (It was also recommended to check the two valves in the radiator cap for sticking.) Link to that post:

    Bottom line given the mileage of the car if the fluid loss is tiny in either the water pump or the timing chain cover then the OP could opt for not fixing it and just checking the fluid level frequently until it gets worse. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

    Ahhhhh! excellent! My neighbor told me the same since the leaks are very minimal and to not stress over what the STEALERSHIP said. Thank you for your input, it is greatly appreciated.
