I was able to average 56 mpg on a trip to work one day. Now my best is 45.6 mpg based on more normal driving

I am guessing mileage will vary from individual not only on how heavy a foot they have, but the mix of traffic w/driving at highway speed they encounter on their drives.

For some of us, ambient temperature plays a big part, too.

I only get 38.6 avg. I have 2000 miles in FL and no matter how I drive, doesnt do the basic 40.

The best is yet it come. In Norway, the price per gallon is about 10% lower for diesel than for gasoline. Diesel also gives slightly better mileage than gasoline. So, my new Prius does not offer better total economy than my previous car, a VW Touran 1.9 TD. This does not disturb me. I am contributing to better air. However, the benefits of technological advancements will set in for real only when there will be a truly family-sized car with plug-in capabilities. A Prius V 7-seater with plug-in will do just fine. When?

Those extra batteries have to go somewhere, I would believe a 5 seat PHV v would be an easier project.

I bet the 7 seat PHV would require a complete new v, perhaps 6 years?

A couple things to pay attention too. When checking your MPG, be aware that you can look at this in your ODO setting, trip A and trip B. If you select ODO and press the display button to see the MPG, this displays the average MPG based on the "total" miles driven from the day you bought the car to the present. To find your MPG for the last few hundreds or thousand miles, I would suggest that you set it to trip A or B and press display until you get the average MPG for trip A or B. Don't forget to reset the trip A or trip B numbers. Don't forget to use cruise control too. The computer reacts faster than what you see and feel with your foot on the gas pedal. You'll be surprised to see the numbers jump up specially after you have learned how to drive the prius. I had the same experience as yours until I switched to trip A or trip B and found out. ;) I'm getting 47 MPG now.

I was told originally there was a brake in period. They were correct as suddenly at 3000 she finally jumped up to 40 and the 44 and I actually got 50 on the v wagon! I really did not change much of my diving habits except for the when I received the 50 MPG Av. I was getting 100 percent on the trip meter indicator and still 36- when sometimes in the red and then 38, but when it finally went past 40... the av. mpg's seem to respond easier.

See my other recent post. The dealer mechanic was right...there is a break in period...suddenly at 3000 went into the 40's and one time 50 av. mpg's! Have not gone back down since! So great! Hope you had a nice time when you were in FL!
