The NY Times Tesla review was debunked as a fraud by the car analytics.

 

How many people can even afford that? I don't think I could! Plus, you are still going to run into the same problem with lack of charging stations, etc. right? For what it is worth, I have always valued CR when buying all of the cars we have and have never been disappointed. Other ratings, like vacuum cleaners I don't value as much because my personal experience has been a lot different than theirs.

 

The Tesla is a great car and it represents the future. However it is not for everyone. I always said a car is the worst investment. You buy it and the moment you sign the sales contract the car is worth less and it is a steady decline. Most people purchase a car for the transportation and driver experience.

Maybe a few cars may appreciate in due time but that is more the exception than the rule.

Perhaps driving a 30K Prius and investing that spare change in a solid investment fund, real estate in a great location or a business is a far wiser choice.

Some things like the Tesla drive the passions of car enthusiasts.

I can say that many Tesla buyers are already invested and continue to, and the car is a conversation at the Country Club.

It's just the car that is trending among the upper middle class

 

The maintenance requirement for the warranty was dropped about 3 weeks ago.

 

It seems more reasonable if it includes wear items. Between regen braking and LEDs, there probably isn't many though.

 

Wrong, at least I am not going to run into the lack of charge stations.
Some people may run into that problem, but I expect most people that are buying the Model S will not.

Regarding your question about how many can afford that... about 500,000 a year in the USA alone. 1 Million luxury cars are sold every year in the US. Tesla is looking for less than 2% of that market.
How many BMWs, Mercedes, high end Audis and Lexus vehicles do you see out there?

 

Wrong, most of the BMW, Mercedes, Audis and Lexus are between $34K- $50K range, not many are above $50K.

 

Got it, thanks for the clarification. Still wouldn't be a practical car for me even if I did win the lottery or got a substantial raise.

 

No question that it won't work for everyone.
A Prius won't work for everyone, neither will a pickup truck.
No single car model will work for everyone. The question is, will it work for enough people such that the company can make money building it.

For our two car family, the Model S works well enough such that we will have two of them by the end of the summer
