I just did the Entune update on my car. Now, I have no Entune!!

I've been able to acces traffic, weather, and Bing, the features of which I have a use and interest, on my feature (non-smart) phone on which I did not have the phone app downloaded or installed! It worked beautifully! After having done the upgrade, however, my access is gone, all of it! I now get a notice that the "entune app is not installed on my phone, therefore, it cannot complete my command. There's no going back and the app never will be available for my phone; I'll never be able to re-gain access to Entune unless I upgrade to a smart phone, which is unlikely to happen.

So, if you are able to connect to Entune without having the app installed on your phone, do not to the Entune update! It appears, with this update, Toyota has corrected a bug that permitted such access without the necessity of running it through their phone gateway: the phone app. I'm guessing, without running through the app, there is no way for Toyota to control Entune subscriptions meaning, you might find you have it for life..at no charge!!

I only wish someone had warned me!! ;'(

You might actually be ok. I never plug my phone in, I connect the car to my phone via bluetooth and all of the apps work perfect.
Go into the phone menu on the car and re-enter all of your credentials. I know in my case when I did the 2.0 Entune update initially mind did not work either.
Now it's fine. I never run the Entune App on my phone.

Thanks! I hope you're right and this works! I'll check it out shortly, but I might be a bit "confused" about what you mean by "credentials"? I'll try to figure this out but I don't remember what credentials the car might have stored initially..or where to find them. I'll let you know.

I'm referring to your Entune username and password on the car as well as the APN settings for your carrier.

It's working! What a relief! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I'm not sure what I did or how to get to it, but, after digging around for a while I did manage to get to a page that asked for my Entune User Name and Password. I entered ATT as the carrier and left APN blank. I then returned to the phone page, clicked "turn on internet connection"...it hung for a few seconds..and I was good to go!

I tested the apps in which I'm interested: traffic, weather, and bing...and they all work. I could care less about the other stuff. Muzzman1, Thanks again for your help! I owe you!! (y)

Update: I just had a call from a Toyota tech regarding yesterday's call to their help line. He confirmed that the update contained "security updates" so "if I was able to access Entune without a phone app before, that no longer would be possible!" hehe...little did he know...I still can!!! :p

No more Toyota Entune updates for me!! Eventually, they're going to close this! ;)

I found the traffic can be a help. Bing will suppliment the points of interest in the nav unit. If what you're seeking isn't found stored on the nav...go to Bing and search there. It'll provide more info about your selections and routing to it is as simple as pressing the button; the nav then takes over and provides the routing. I don't see that there's much value to be found in any of the other stuff. Would I pay for these few features, so far, the answer is NO! But, while I have them, I plan to utilize them.

I'm using a cheap little LG Encore.

The one ENTUNE feature I found useful is the Charging Stations app. I have a 2012 PiP. One connection to a smart phone is what it takes, as the Charging Stations app caches the charging icon overlay locally within the car nav memory. So, any smart phone, in my case my son's, can pull the charging icon info once into the car memory, and then you can de-register the smart phone if it's not yours. This works for the nearby metro area - like 10 mile radius or so, so it won't work for multi-state trips. Of course, as the ground truth about local charging stations changes and they slowly densify, it'll eventually be worthwhile to reconnect and update that local map cache every few months or so... Note: the charging stations icon map has details for each charging icon, and it lists which are free and which charge $$$, and other conditions. In an urban area that is a useful feature.

If I were to travel regularly and repeatedly to other urban areas I'd definitely get a smartphone just for this PiP -useable feature.

You helped me last year and I'm hoping you can again. It stopped working and, for the life of me, I can't find the menu to enter my credentials. Any ideas? Is yours still working?

Okay...I found it! The credential page is buried and changed, seemingly it even happened today as I worked on it. The first time today, it was the page I remembered and asked my carrier. Later on, when, finally, I was able to access the page again, the carrier name was gone. My original error today was that I entered the wrong password...and then couldn't find a way to return. It seemed Toyota was changing things as I was working on it. :( Anyway, it's all back to normal. Sorry to have bothered you.

Beware though, in my discussions with Toyota today, they indicated that they've done updates to prevent accessing Entune without having the app installed on the phone. I suspect the most recent over the air update added more security features to try to prevent what we're doing. I think a good rule of thumb at this point is to REFUSE any further downloads of Entune updates! Otherwise, we'll be forced into buying new smart phones and accompaning more expensive cell service. Personally, I'm quite content with paying the $100 annual fee I pay now and would prefer NOT to be forced to yield to rates paid by the majority of cell users. ;)

my understanding is that APN info confuse the non tech savy user. They choose to bury it deeper to eliminate confusion. They also fixed the bug on older version where the APN login info is 1 info used for all 4 phones. This new update changed it to allow a different APN info for each phones.

2.2.0 was released a few weeks ago. The update is by USB stick, dealer install only.

What's new on 2.2.0? Is there a fee to get the update from the dealer?

Would it be too much to ask someone with 2.2 to make a backup to USB, zip and post it here for all others to download?

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. Based on the previous USB update, which was sent directly to owners to install, the stick contains all the files to be updated along with an installer program which knows where to put them.

Given only an updated vehicle, there's no way to know which files were updated, no way to get them on to a USB stick, and no copy of the necessary installation program. Nor is there any way to backup the entire system.
