I got the fuel gauge problem fixed today. I've read that for this, they have to swap out the computer "thingy" that records mileage and ghost it onto a new "thingy."

I'm terrible forgetful, but I could have sworn I had 17.8k miles and now it says 16.8k. Is there any way they could have put in the wrong number? Does anyone know enough about the technical details to know if it's possible to put in the wrong mileage?

The ODO is programmed at the factory. Your dealer sent them some reading (did you take it in to have the car checked for the fuel guage problem then leave with it to bring it back later for the actual fix?) and that's the mileage that's programmed into the new combination meter.

Just look at it as a free extra 1000 miles of warranty!

    evan's got it right.

check your work order. that should have the number of miles when you brought it in for the fix.

did you drive 1000 miles between when they ordered the part and when you brought it in?

Well, I didn't think I'd driven that many miles, but maybe. Maybe I'm just crazy. Basically, I wanted to be reassured that it wasn't like they just had to type in a number and typed a 6 instead of a 7.
