sounds reasonable to me, based on the reports anyway. looks like a few people in the picture would do well to go back to manual biking.:p

I need to call the NYPD and see about exporting those confiscated bikes to Texas. I see a small business here. I can kick back 10% of sales to the NYPD offduty fund.

I'm quite serious when I say much of that article reads like an onion article.

From the picture of the four people, three of whom are obese (two morbidly so) complaining about bikes, to some of the comments from people they spoke to it's just quite silly.

I didn't know e-bikes were illegal here. If I didn't have a hyper fuel efficient vehicle I would strongly consider dropping a grand or two one an e-assist bike for work commuting (not great on a regular bike because we have no showers, and also it's a lot of riding day in and day out).

I have an e-bike and it is great. It is a more expensive "mountain bike" with a LiFePO4 pack. When I was much much larger I got it so that I could ride it manually with no electric input without fear of going too far an not being able to get home. I live on a mountain so at the end of your journey, you have to go 2 miles uphill with a 1800ft vertical climb... Not fun even if you are in shape. With the e-bike you can ride until you are actually tired, then head home and "lazy mode" it up the mountain. It helped tremendously. Otherwise you constantly double guess yourself. Should I turn back now so I can make it up the big hill? Sometimes you get back and you have more in you. Other times not.

Now I use it to go to work on nicer days. If you don't want to be sweaty, it is nice. On the way home you don't need the electric part of it. Another great feature is crossing roads. The ebike can accelerate with no pedalling much faster than a human can, even a human in great shape. So when the light turns green and I need to cross heavy traffic to the other side of the road, I just launch it in electric, it whizzes to the other side of the road faster than most vehicles and then I can push the button to get out of electric and pedal until the next time I need to cross roads. I unfortunately have 2 major roads to cross on my way to or from work and the trails don't cross them.

    Yea, let's see
. . . buy a moped or honda 50 (both which can travel 30mph or more) and you can drive reckless, and be good to go.
. . . get in shape w/ regular bike (and you can travel 30mph or more) and you can drive reckless, and be good to go.

BUT ... electric assist? Now you need to be dealt with? At their core - all laws must be rational & not unduly discriminatory. Since honda 50's are legal - where is the rational in confiscating similarly light narrow low powered vehicles?
